Doesn't sound that ridiculous to me given there are DS games where it becomes impossible to progress. So, the idea of a thing like that happening in a GB doesn't seem that Farfetch'd. Except the thing I'm thinking of was more about actually being punished for being bad at the game than anything else. But yeah, not a thing I'd heard of.

That's got literally nothing to do with sequence breaking a locked event though

I was thinking more about how watertight the locking of the event is. I forget the exact details of bits in gen1.

It's locked to walking off the ship when the captain is beaten/you've been given cut, hence why you're able to keep the S.S. Anne docked by losing to a trainer after having gotten cut and why walking on and off after getting it will trigger it. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a glitch that made it leave early but there's not really any reputable mention of it existing.

I could swear it happened more than once to me. Vividly remember the message appearing when I tried to use a regular Pokeball on both Snorlax and Mewtwo. I figured I had to use a stronger pokeball at the time so I updated to ultra balls and didn't get that message with them.

It only ever appeared for single chance captures such as snorlax, mewtwo, and the legendary birds. I had Pokemon Red version which was purchased from a car boot sale back in about 2003/4. If I can dig it out from under my bed somewhere I'll boot it up and see if I can get the message again.
I'm about 75 - 80% sure that I saw that message more than once when using regular pokeballs against snorlax and mewtwo.

Maybe Ape had a full inventory, so could cure the captain but couldn't receive the HM?

I never even got to fight my rival. I think I had fought a few battles and then wanted to heal, so went back to Vermillion City to use the Pokemon Centre and the animation of the S.S. Anne leaving then played.

After that I made sure when playing the game to do the entire S.S. Anne in one go to get the Cut HM (I was in the habit of restarting the entire game if I felt I couldn't progress which wasn't the best of ideas but hey, I was a stupid 10 year old and I stopped restarting the game after I was able to get into Vermillion Gym).

Am I right in thinking I should evolve my Nidorina ASAP? She's very much the weak link of my team at the moment.

She's around level 20 on Blue, BTW, so her best moves are still Tackle and Scratch.

Nidorina doesn't learn any must have moves really, most are relegated to TMs so you might as well evolve Nidorina at Lv. 22 since Nidoqueen learns body slam at lv. 23 but there's no moves afterwards. Just look up what learns what attacks at what levels if you ever wonder about what level you should evolve things at.

Just about ready to attempt the league with my level 76 Charizard, should go ok, if I don't manage to do it first time I've got 8/9 rare candies sitting in my PC box.

My brother leveled up a pokemon with rare candies & it turned out to be really weak instead of training it properly.

Yeah but you can keep gaining stat experience past level 100 in RBY so there's no reason as far as I remember not to use things like rare candies.

I imagine your Pokémon's stats stop growing eventually though?

They'll stop growing when they hit 100 unless you deposit them in a box and withdraw them since that'll recalculate stats. This was what happened even in Gen IV and was how you could re-EV train pokemon. There's a max level of stat experience individual stats have similar to EVs but that's the cap.

Every stat has a cap of 65535 EVs and there's no overall cap like there is now. EVs you get from pokemon are equal to their base stats. So for example, if you were to beat a Rattata, your pokemon would get 30 HP, 56 Attack, 35 Defense, 25 Special and 72 Speed EVs since those are Rattata's base stats. So yes, EV training takes a long time in this game.

Yeah they each give 2560 to their respective stats (Calcium being Special, no Zinc) but only for the first 25600 of each.

Charizard only run of Pokémon Red complete and I've caught Mewtwo. Had no issues with the league bar the Gengar's as they liked to use confuse ray and my flamethrower didn't OHKO them. Going to leave starting Yellow for a bit, got other games to play on 3DS first.

I might just give it a go, only things that may be an issue in the league are Bruno's Onix, his level alone by the time you get to Giovani would probably get you through gym 8, can Pikachu learn dig in gen 1?

Ash Run of Yellow. You are only allowed to use Pokemon caught by Ash Ketchum in the anime.

That'd be pretty very easy actually, could just have Pikachu, Venasaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Pidgeot and Snorlax and you'd have a very strong team. Unless you meant only Pokemon used by Ash? So Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charizard, Squirtle, Pidgeotto and Snorlax? Still a decent team though but would be a little tougher. Can't remember if his Pidgeotto only evolved once he released it or just before.
