Yeee, a VGC thread. <3
Teambuilding currently, gonna test MegaPidg because why not. Really no idea where to go in the meta at the moment though, only issue for me with NatDex is that there's so much choice. Oh, and so much to calc for. ;_;
Sabrofra wrote:Personally, I'd like to keep my current team, but a lot of them are all really high on the usage list (link in OP) so I feel my team might be a little predictable.

Honestly, it's better to have high usage 'mons that maul things than rely on unpredictability that'll eventually become less of a surprise as the meta trundles on, or lesser-used 'mons that don't necessarily perform their role as well as the top-tier ones. (:

If Mega Pidg had Focus Blast I'd make it a priority to test him out, from the jokey team I put together this morning I can say Hurricane spam is fun although not always game winning.
Trying to test out all the new Megas barre Mega Beedrill because priority wrecks it looking at calcs.

I tried Mega Pidgeot (alongside a team of Zapdos, Lapras, Omastar, Nidoking and Venomoth), it didn't go well.

Arcanine's decent, misses the Fire Gem but Normal Gem Extremespeed is delicious.

I'm guessing the 4 rock weaknesses didn't help?

Can't shake this feeling that I'm using offensive Sylveon wrong... What set and spread should I be using for an offensive one?

Sylveon's an odd beast. As it's so notorious now it has a tendancy to be the first target to be taken down (usually with a double target or very strong attack) due to it's low speed. I would recommend you have some speed control to back up Choice Specs variants unless you know your opponent won't lead for it (e.g vs heavy Trick Room where setting up first turn is a priority). With all variants though make sure to EV for what you are doing. With Tailwind make sure to outspeed Mega Salamence. In general teams I personally invest 44HP/252DEF to take Salamence Jolly Double Edge but that's just personal preference.

As for movesets some Specs variants literally use just two moves; Hyper Voice and Sleep Talk for Smeargle based teams/Trick Room battles with opposing Amoonguss. I would suggest Hyper Voice, Hidden Power Ground (for Heatran, hits poison/fire types and generally covers Sylveon better than HP Fire), Protect and a filler to accompany your team. Filler can be either Helping Hand for a faster buddy to take out a faster threat, Hyper Beam for a quick KO, HP Fire for Ferrothorn, Psychic or even oddities like Light Screen and Baby Doll Eyes to go through Protect. Tons of stuff you can experiment with. Just don't let fast attackers or Wide Guard ruin your day

Bump, but one I feel is needed. Two Premier Challenges are coming this month and I feel it would be great practise for many of you teambuilding at the moment. Sadly both are too far away for me to attend but I'm sure they'll be more convenient for a lot of you here

Could actually go to one or the other for less than £30 (including event cost). :D

I'll add them to the OP. Any future Pokémon events, I'll add to the OP.

Damn southerners. It might be possible to make one, but it's just so far away and complicated to get too. And the cost, etc. And I haven't put a team on my games yet.

Yeovil's almost a definite for me. Crawley's a maybe leaning more toward no at the moment, I've got stuff to do in the evening so I'd probably have to leave the event by half 3, it doesn't seem worth the journey. Yeovil's is intended to be monthly though, they'll hopefully follow suit and repeat it in the future (There's already one planned in Crawley for Feb 28th)

Seeing how the North gets the Nationals event I think it more than balances out. :P

I thought last year was the first time? Prior to that it was Birmingham (and even further back, London).

For my money Birmingham was probably the best option. Even though London would be more convenient for me personally Birmingham seems like a decent central place for everyone (well, except those in Scotland...)

When you're as far South as me Birmingham might as well be the North, but valid point. I agree that Birmingham seems the fairest location for all but the NEC where they had it in 2011 has gone through a bit of a decline in events from what I saw on my last trip there.

I'm literally living 10 minutes away from Lands End so everywhere is North to me. Yeovil is sort of possible, but very expensive at the same time, and I don't know if I have the time to be spending that much money for something unless I'm really competitive about it.

Yeah, the NEC's kind of gone to eton mess and the council can't afford it and have to sell it off and things last I heard. Manchester's not exactly a hard to reach location despite being north because of transport links.

But yeah, would be nice if the Premier Events weren't all in "obscure" locations on Sundays when public transport doesn't exist.

It's less about whether it's difficult to get to it's more about how much it costs to get there because of it being 212 miles away. Anyway once I've sorted out me applications for srs real life stuff I'm getting stuck in on making a semi decent VGC team.

With Nationals I sort of treat it like a holiday, then it's justifiable. Save up money for it, go for several days rather than just one like most seem to, go to a cheaper hotel away from the venue rather than on its doorstep (last year I stayed for just under a week for less than it would've cost me for one night at Event City), do the whole tourist thing and ultimately have fun with it. If you're travelling the length of the country and it's going to cost you £80 in train tickets or whatever then definitely go for more than just Pokémon.

But that's Nationals, you can make more of an exception for that as it's a big once a year event. For premier challenges the best I can suggest is make some friends in a similar situation to you and try to work it out between you. Check out your local streetpass group, check for any local TCG groups or gaming meet ups, see if there's anyone else interested and work out a system where someone drives and you split the cost or something. And don't forget other forms of public transport exist besides trains; it's not Pokémon related, but when I was at Uni in Bath it'd cost around about £40-50 to get the train to London, but £10 to get a coach. Sure it took about an hour longer unless you went late at night but it was much cheaper.

Would've been easier last season when our local TCG league had the country's head judge. Now we don't even have a professor. Not enough VG interest around here though, sadly. Sure does suck living in a desolate corner of the country with the West Coast Mainline as the only means of escape.

Anyway, still not been able to see the appeal of Sylveon. I think we discussed it before, but it just seems so irrationally popular with no obvious benefits. I know one or two players I follow on Twitter have built it into their teams and ended up never using it.

Main reason why it's so good (and I end up using it in almost every team I make) is because Fairy type spread moves are nigh-on unpunishable to use and easy to pair up with (it's only bulky steel types that like to take it and very uncommon poison types, stuff like Bisharp and Gengar doesn't want to take the hit). Simply switching out of a Sylveon is also punished by Hyper Voice being a spread move in the first place, plus Substitute isn't a safe play except for on Heatran, etc when Sylveon can get through the Substitute with Hyper Voice being sound based. It's only really Wide Guard that puts a stop to it's antics and even then people forget it has an amazing supportive movepool from last season still

I'm really liking Mega Gardevoir, does what Sylveon does but outspeeds Bisharp. Couple it with Zapdos for speed control and something with Intimidate or Will-O and it seems quite effective.

Still yet to finish the Delta episode yet. Once that's out of the way, EV and IV training for me! Still trying to come up with a new team. I like the ones I currently have like I've said before, but I'll most likely change one or two.

I agree, surprised we haven't seen more of her. Has roughly the same movepool but you get some bonus utility options and much better speed (just over base 100 would have been optimal but I can't complain) in exchange for an item slot. Shame a lot of mega's aren't being used because giving up ridiculous powerhouses like Kangaskhan, Metagross and Salamence is tough in a tournament setting
