Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon

Post by Jezo » Thu May 21, 2015 7:37 pm

No, no, it's not super because of this forum...

Just another sequel in the series, coming late 2015/early 2016. Is a cool series, loved the DS ones, can't remember if they made one yet for 3DS, but I mean... Here's one now. Discuss.

All we really know so far is that you fight alongside legendary/'mythical' pokemon.

It better have all 700+ pokemon (apart from Volcanion and maybe Hoopa) on it because that is one of the things that needs to change. We also need to choose from more than just 5 pokemon for a start. GTI was a disappointment, really hope they don't make that mistake again.

Yeah, Gates to Infinity (which was on 3DS, to answer your question) was a graphical upgrade and a significant downgrade in almost every other possible way. Far fewer pokémon, fewer starter options, fewer dungeons, stupid story, etc. I quite liked the removal of hunger, and the upgrading of moves was interesting, although doing so at the expense of making your basic attack worthless was stupid. Those two things are about the only two changes I can praise, and neither of them make up for the disastrous rest of the game.

Never played GtI since I was warned off by the reviews, but I gather that it was eton mess so hopefully the new one is a return to the old format. Also hope it gets a better name along the way, Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon just sounds stupid. Even the word order is wrong; Super Pokemon Mystery Dungeon would have been better.

I'd actually like hunger to come back, part of the appeal of the old titles for me was that they've got more of a challenge to them than the main series and hunger was a big part of that in that it provided some risk/reward thinking - explore the whole of every floor to possibly get more stuff but risk running out of food or play it safe and run up/down the stairs as soon as you find them but potentially miss out on good loot.

I only played Explorers of Time, but yeah, I remember how easily you could lose everything, which was entertaining. After a while, I was just lobbing my body at Dialga since my MC and Partner (Munchlax and Pikachu) were both elementally disadvantaged. Must have taken like 50 tries to beat that sod. One thing that annoyed me was how low recruit rates were, to the point when I would finally recruit someone, they would be so underlevelled it wasn't worth using them in spite of MC and Partner and they just chewed through my stash of revival seeds

Whereas in Darkness you just made sure to carry around one of those seeds that maxed out your Attack and Sp. Attack and ploughed through any given boss.

One shotting Dialga with a Violent Seed boosted Focus Punch was glorious

As I'm sure you are all aware on how much I love the mystery Dungeon series fair to say I'm pretty excited for this, my hope is that its not a N3DS exclusive as I doubt I'll be getting one soon. It'd be nice to see if they learnt from their GtI mistakes but also on the improvements they made, I think the Pokemon Paradise idea was quite neat and allowed for a plethora of shops and farms that weren't available in other hub worlds.

I'm kind of burnt out on the notion to be honest. They're fun games but I don't know, they had a couple of good runs but the gameplay's just not interesting enough for me to really be able to buy into it again. Hope it stays off mobile for the fans though.

Might be the first Pokémon game where I decide whether I buy it or not actually based on reviews and prerelease info. After GtI, I was quite happy for PMD to die. The first two were great. Sky seemed like it was pushing it a little, but not much of a problem since we're used to third versions. Then GtI kinda ruined everything and I became of the view that it might not be worth risking another game so not to tarnish what were two very good games in the first two editions.

Keep GtI storytelling. Bring back the pre-game quiz and legendary mechanics.
I think we can all agree that i`m a great asset to the human race.

Seriously? You are joking right.

Anyway, I loved the first three PMD's. I hope they bring back some of the features they removed in GtI, like Rik said having the hunger element made the game so much harder, which is one of the things that I really enjoyed about PMD, it's not the easiest pokémon game.

The only thing GtI got right was sharing experience even with pokémon you didn't use; that allowed you to chop and change your team when you felt like it.

By far the best Pokémon spinoff franchise. Hopefully they do it justice considering the last game was gooseberry fool eton mess.

Seems this one features all starter Pokemon and also Pikachu and Riolu as playables and will feature all available Pokémon. Already better than GtI.

Also it's out September in Japan

I've only played Blue Rescue Team and it was a fantastic experience, loved every second of the game. Haven't bothered to try any others as I've heard they were all eton mess bar explorers of time etc, I also heard that they had removed the personality quiz at the start of the game which IMO gave the first games a ton of appeal.

I'd love it if they threw it back to what it was, hunger was a great feature, the story was great, I loved the quiz and even the post game was surprisingly good. I'd definitely give it a go if some of this stuff returned, I'll probably end up trying out time as well because everyone keeps talking about primal dialga and I'm sitting here out of the loop.

But do you have to take the personality test. That was always one of my favourite part of PMD.

The personality test was a great idea looking back on it, it made you play as Pokemon you'd never really consider using otherwise. My first run on Blue was as a Bulbasaur; never would have chosen to play as it if the quiz hadn't lumped me as one.

Would have liked Axew to return as a starter, but it would have been pretty strange if it had. Large range of starters and all pokemon available is a significant improvement on GtI already though.

Don't forget Psyduck either, or Machop (although he's not as big a loss). 20 possible starters is already a pretty big pool though, adding more would seem excessive even if it did add a bit more variety.
Not getting too hopeful for the return of the personality quiz after having looked at the trailer again since it shows what looks suspiciously like a selection wheel with all the starters on it. Only other thing it could be is for partner selection, but given that it usually takes away ones of the same type and this one had them all on then it looks like the quiz is missing again.

Just seen the english translation of the trailer, and the teammates not shrinking is hilarious when you have a wailord in the party. It looks comically large.
