Mod system

Post by Thomas » Sun Oct 26, 2014 2:20 pm

The mod system seems like massive overkill for such a small forum. It would be more logical to have 4 or less mods that have 3 or more years of ONM modding under their belt. Things like thread locking should be kept to clearly offensive or disruptive posts.

There are currently 13 mods. Way, way too much if we actually think about it.

My theory is that the mod team are spineless and don't want to suggest removing anyone in case they get upset.

There are so many of us because we're all adults with lives/work/university to be getting on with, and as much as we'd like to, we can't dedicate all of our time to the forum.

There is no harm in having more mods than are necessarily needed, and in fact it makes things easier as different people are able to organise and look over different things. It worked fine as it is on ONM and I expect will continue to work fine here. All current ONM moderator's were given the option of continuing to be mods here on SONM, and considering the good job that everyone does and the fact that we work as one team without a hierarchy, it only seems fair that that should be the way it is organised. I imagine most of the community would agree too.

As far as how mods decide which threads to lock or what they should moderate, that will continue to work as it always has, at the mod's discretion and in accordance with the forum rules. This worked on ONM, and considering that we want to continue the community in much the same way, it will continue.

Normally I'd agree (and say there is too many), but in this case I actually think the number of moderators could be justified. Considering this forum has only been open since the 24 Oct, yet already has ~3500 posts suggests that is extremely active and therefore needs constant monitoring by people. This then means there needs to be enough mods to check the constant onslaught of new content.

Around 10% of online members as moderators generally is still overkill.

Surely it would make sense just to have a different mod group entirely of very active users probably non-Uni students?

(BTW not volunteering, I'm at Uni and wouldn't have the time either, just saying carrying over the mods just seems pointless if you're not gonna be very active)

Does having lots of mods hurt the forums in any way though.

Except it really doesn't because anything of any note is discussed in the mod-room to get a unified opinion on the matter. If anything more mods helps to streamline things more because one mod having a different opinion to the rest carries less weight.

Surely when it comes to mods, the more the better? It means there's less need to constantly add more if/when the user base expands. Also it means this place will never be neglected as someone will always be around.

I don’t mind the number of moderators at this moment in time, but I do have an issue with how over protective you’ve all become. I get that you want the user base to have a smooth transition from one web-site to another; I respect what you are doing for what little of the community remains. But and a major but here is that you are already showing signs of stress and becoming a little overbearing with how you tackle simple questions. That will push members away pretty quicker than anything else.

Honestly I don't think it's an issue and to paint is as such seems like it may be based on other factors or pre-conceptions (although this is just my speculation). The current team allows for our differing schedules to compliment each other, for example OR works during the day but I work an evening shift. Hell even if this was an issue, we've cut down from 21 to 12 so it's hardly what it used to be.

I think it's a little unfair to address this as a moderator problem, it's most likely something that is happening on an individual basis. However, if you can provide some examples (be it through pm or here) I'm sure we can asses the situation.
I used to be part of the community, now I just watch it...
