Welcome to the future! SONM has updated

Post by OrangeRakoon » Wed Feb 22, 2017 2:03 am

As you've probably already noticed, Super ONM has just undergone a bit of a facelift! More than just some cosmetic changes, the underlying forum software has now been upgraded to the latest version (that's phpBB 3.2 for those interested). We have also moved over to a brand new server to benefit from a cleaner install - this should make maintenance and future upgrades easier, which means a better supported website for you all! Not all of the updates are going to visibly affect using the site, but there are a few big changes with the new forum software that should make using SONM a better and easier experience.

What's new?

Responsive site design/mobile friendly

The forum will now respond dynamically to being resized, and also displays a lot better at lower resolutions and screen sizes. Using Super ONM on a mobile device should now be much easier!

Notifications

You can now receive notifications for different events on the forum, such as being quoted in a topic or being sent a PM. Notifications make it easier to keep track of conversations you are a part of across the forum!

Updated styles

The ONM Classic and Super ONM styles have been recreated for the new forum. All existing user preferences have been reset due to the styles being recreated, so if you want to switch back to the Super ONM style please do so from the user control panel. The alternative Super Blue style has not been continued. Super ONM is no longer full screen width at all screen resolutions due to the new responsive site design, but it does have a greater maximum width than the default ONM Classic style. This should be improved sometime in the future.

What's still to do?

Banner archive migration

All of our old site banners will be transferred across and stored in a more robust manner. Until then the current banner archive thread is broken and will not display the old banners.

The old front page images will not be maintained on the new server (although I have a personal archive for posterity).

SSL/HTTPS support

Following the server migration and forum upgrade, the next big change in the works is switching from http to https. This will mean a better website from a security and privacy perspective, and more favourable rankings on search engines such as google.

Further style tweaks and support

The Super ONM style will be updated to handle full screen width at all resolutions at a later date. If there is demand for the Super Blue style it can be recreated once the full screen width fix has been applied to Super ONM, as it will also rely on it.

Please let us know if anything appears broken or if you come across any issues with the new design. We've tested it as best as we can but there will always be little niggles that slip by, and any feedback is always appreciated!

This is going to take some getting used to, but I do like what you've done here.

I guess topic icons are gone as well then? If so, fair enough, no one really used them that much.

Thanks! Topic icons still exist (you can use them in the relevant subforums like GNC), but there are a few issues with displaying them nicely at the moment. We're currently thinking about the best way to move forwards now we have some more options.

unplayable without full screen, hd screens have been around for years now

also names of pages always start with super onm now so when i next go on a badposting spree it'll be difficult to find out which tabs are repying to a post and which ones are browsing

Will change this around, this was customised on the old styles for the same reason

Looks great. Though I think the word censor might be a bit broken, even if just for previous posts.
In other words - stuck on even though it's turned off.

I already miss wide view and I've been browsing for 5 minutes, this looks horrendous on my monitors now.

Other than that looks fine.

Why you're wrong

But seriously, that's some good reasoning as to why the default style has the maximum width it does. The alternative styles partly exist to give people that wider screen option and that's fine, I just couldn't get it working nicely and didn't want to delay the whole update to tweak it. I'll have more of a look tonight.

Got an example? Worth knowing that if someone who uses the word filter quotes you, they are quoting the filtered text so it will have the replaced words in it for everyone.

EDIT: I can see what you mean, will look into it

Works way better on mobile but I haven't been on desktop yet will edit this post once I am.

I like it on mobile now though although I think sigs are a bit broken and avatars could be a bit bigger.

EDIT:

Desktop is bad needs wide screen give me my super blue back.

I don't like having giant blue bars on the side of the page.

Also the classic forum icons look eton mess I prefer the ones on Super Blue.

other than that it's nice I like that it works better on mobile and although nobody had quoted me yet so I can't test it notifications sound nice.

The boards seem more cluttered than they were before, i'm not sure if that's due to the forum being made narrower or something, but when you look at off topic in particular, it looks kinda odd.

Still, that's just a superficial thing and the forum as a whole is very good.

I'm just grateful that here at sonm, we don't get the infamous ONM lag which used to play havoc on the old forums.

Cheers D.J, there is definitely more visual "clutter" which is partly because there is actually now more information being displayed, like how the index now tells you the title of the last post made as well as the user and time. Hopefully we can tweak this to improve the general look :)

the censor is broken, I've got it disabled but even my own posts are now censored.

also, where did the option go for keeping me logged in. I just flicked back to the tab I left open, refreshed the page and had to log back in again. Logging in takes effort, I like to just stay logged in forever tbh.

notification looks fancy I like it thanks for giving me one.

And yet you couldn't even get links to automatically open a new tab instead of using the one you're browsing the forum in.

Middle click, ctrl + click, right click > open in new tab
If you're on mobile, hold down to get the option
You can also probably configure your browser to give the default behaviour you desire
