Civilization is a series of turn-based strategy games wherein you oversee the rise (and possibly fall) of your own empire throughout the ages. The latest game in the series, Civilization: Beyond Earth, takes the usual civ formula and basic gameplay and applies it to a sci-fi future, with the player leading the colonisation of a new world.

So, let's talk Civ. Definitely interested to find out how many people here play the game/series. Would also be super interested in organising a SONM game if anyone else was interested. I've played with a few of you before and it was great fun, and now Beyond Earth is out we have every reason to play some more!

To kick off discussion in thread, which is your favourite Civ game and why? Also, do you have Beyond Earth yet, and if so what do you think?

My Favourite Civ game is probably the original:


I don't play it now, and haven't played it in years but it was one of the very first 'PC' games I played. It came with my first PC, a 486 many, many years ago and I poured countless hours into it (and CivNet).

I have Civ: Beyond Earth, I've only had the time for one proper game this week but so far I'm loving it, though with a busy week ahead I doubt I'll be getting to play it again any time soon.

I think pretty much the only main games in the series I didn't really play were the Civ 3 & 4 ones, I bought Civ 3 but it was simplified quite a bit and pretty buggy so it quickly found itself on the shelf of no return and I avoided Civ 4 because of it. Civ 5 was great though, if a bit excessive with the expansions and DLC.

Original Civ is one of the first games I played on PC. Had it in a twin pack with the original worms, iirc, but hardly played that as civ took up all the time. My Dad even printed off the entire civlopedia - that was quite a printout! Looking back now though the mechanics have been greatly improved and iterated on. I think in the original civ you just took over a capital city and immediately gained control of all of their other cities?

Civ 5 became the best civ once all of the expansions were released. Gods and Kings fixed a lot that was wrong with it, and then Brave New World brought a whole new level of strategy and so much more content to the table. Religion was actually a masterstroke too in how it was implemented I think - wars would genuinely be fought over it in multiplayer even when it wasn't affecting the game that much, but just because of the want to have your own do better.

I recently brought Civ V with all the expansions.
I'm just waiting until I get enough time to properly get into it.
I've played a few hours so far, still getting to grips with the mechanics and stuff.

I really like the idea of Civ in space, so I'm definitely getting Beyond Earth soon.

Oh yeah the two main expansions definitely added cool things to the game but this nonsense is just insane:

Oh yeah, all the map packs are nonsense. The only good packs are the ones that add new civs, as map packs seem pointless to me in a game that randomly generates new maps by default. Still, I picked up the complete edition for hardly anything at all, so I'm not too fussed as it wasn't by any means extortionate when I got it.

I am worried that they will go the mass of DLC route with Beyond Earth though, especially considering how few civs are in it to begin with. Although they cover a lot of the Earth already, so there probably isn't too much left they can justifiably add. Maybe West/North Europe, or Nordic? That area seems missing at the moment.

Only one I've played is Civ Revolution. It's pretty good. Not much of a strategy person besides Fire Emblem but Revolution impressed me.

(But no, I only played the demo of revolution on PS3, but I wasn't a massive fan. It seemed too streamlined for my tastes, but I guess for non strategy fans like yourself that probably improves things.)

They're not that fun though, Babylon is the most fun (and also OP) civ to play as.

But Venice are clearly the best.

Double trade routes combined with some Tradition, all of Patronage and Aesthetics, and the first level of Commerce (for 25% gold boost in capital, which equates to 25% boost throughout your entire civ because 1 city) means you become the richest person in the world with an empire consisting of all of the city-states, and then you diplomatic victory.

Archipegalo maps are basically easy mode regardless of civ
