Post by bort » Thu Dec 29, 2016 2:33 pm

it's round about close enough to the end of the year, and since no one else has made a thread about it (i think??), here it is

but rather than make it into a contest, lets just have fun and talk about all the cool games we played this year

so, what was YOUR personal individual favourite game released this year?

maybe you don't have a favourite this year? why not tell us your favourite game that you beat this year that didn't come out this year, that would also be pretty cool to talk about

-------

as for me, i can't really think of any games that i bought this game and actually finished, off the top of my head i think my two favourites were probably Amplitude (PS4) and Monster Hunter Generations (3DS)

i played a lot of cool other games this year, like Overwatch which was fun for a couple of months but my interest in competitive online games kind of waned in the middle of the year, and Dirt Rally which i think came out last year, but i just got it for christmas and i'm having a lot of fun with that

so how about YOU??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Best game of 2016: Watch Dogs 2
Best game i beat which didn't come out in 2016: Everybody's Gone To The Rapture.

I've also had a lot of fun playing Far Cry Primal, Infinite Warfare, Battlefield 1, and F1 2016.

Haven't had the money to dump into lots of games this year so going to go with Dark Souls 3. A fantastic game in one of my top series with probably the most depth in weapons and providing pretty decent areas to explore while pushing lots of the lore aspects of the franchise, but even if it's very dated by now I still think DaS is the better game. Still need to return for the DLC, probably going to wait til the second lot drops though.

Honourable mentions:

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth - If you're an RPG fan or you grew up with Digimon then there's something here for you. Heavily flawed you'd struggle to call it a great game with its problems but it looks brilliant and I really enjoyed my time with it.
Street Fighter V - If only a full game was out at release, but all that crap aside, it's really fun to play and I'm looking forward to the future of SFV. I really hope Capcom pull their eton mess together on it.
Final Fantasy XV - from the little I've played it's pretty gooseberry fool good.

Probably update a bit when I can remember what else came out.

Here's a list if anyone's struggling.

I've not actually bought any games this year, so I'm just gonna sit back and watch.

Without a doubt The Last Guardian for me. I was easily able to overlook the technical issues and honestly didn't have much of a problem with Trico. It's an experience you just won't get anywhere else, or even again for that matter. I still think about the game and I'm still trying to piece together connections.

Still making my way through FFXV but with this game, you can't simply overlook the problems. It had potential to be so much more which is why it isn't my goty. I hyped this game beyond belief during the Versus days and then tempered my expectations after it became XV. Which I'm glad I did.

Uncharted 4 was incredible, but at the end of the day it's another Uncharted game. Not taking anything way from the godlike team behind it, because those guys are pushing the boundaries like no one else is.

Inside was short and sweet. I love how it handled environmental narrative within a 2.5D perspective. It didn't really leave as much of an impression on my as much as it did for others tho.

I didn't really get to play much this year either but that doesn't mean I'm not aware of all other other brilliant games coming out. I plan to try and jump into some in 2017. Especially Dishonored 2 because that world looks amazing.
I am the reason, the answer and the problem.

Uncharted 4
Felt like it was the perfect way to cap off the series in more ways than one. The characters were as charming as ever, the environments are beautiful and the gunplay is vastly improved over its predecessors; thanks in part to the inclusion of better stealth mechanics and the awesome grappling hook. The multiplayer is also pretty sweet too.

Inside
It's basically Limbo but better in every way. It controls better, it looks better and its way creepier. I still can't decide if I liked the ending or not, but the ride that led me there was some of the best 2-3 hours I had all year.

Battlefield 1
I feel like everyone had their online shooter this year, whether that be Overwatch, TitanFall or even Call of Duty, but for me BF1 hooked me so much. It was just so refreshing to go back to early 20th century war and also a Battlefield that wasn't obsessed over "levelution". Once you finished a map, it truly felt like a "Battlefield" and it was probably the most fun I've had with a BF game since Bad Company 2.

Honourable mentions; Deus Ex Mankind Divided, The Division, Pokemon Sun and Tokyo Mirage Sessions

Dishonourable mentions; Star Fox Zero, The Last Guardian, Layers of Fear and Paper Mario Color Splash

I only got Monster Hunter Generations and Stardew Valley this year

MHG is I guess what I would expect of MH, though the styles make the fights a lot more kinetic and fast, which is a welcome tweak to the often more rigid battle systems of these games

Stardew Valley was a type of game I never really expected to find myself playing, but I did and am I glad I bought it. It's just so relaxing.

I'm like 20-30 hours into each of these games and have yet to get to the meat of them, mind.

Favourite game I played for the first time this year was probably Metroid Prime

Got really into Star Wars Battlefront at the start of the year, but since the release of Uncharted 4 in May (?) none of the recent expansions drew me back in.

Iv'e otherwise not bought many new releases in the grand scheme of things. Mankind Divided was an incredibly immersive experience - one that I fully intend on double dipping into - and Mafia 3, which I'm still currently playing, is a thoroughly enjoyable open-world game despite it's flaws. Overall though, Uncharted 4 (both solo and online) is undoubtedly my GOTY for 2016.

In part because I'm building up something a collection of games that need to be finished, and also because the 20th anniversary of Pokemon came around, I only bought about 4 games that actually came out this year, the rest of what I played was from previous years.

So in that order:

1. Pokemon Moon
2. Pokken Tournament
3. Pokemon Go!
4. Metroid Prime: Federation Force

Other games I played this year that came out in year's before

Undertale
Pokemon Yellow (VC)
Pokemon HeartGold
Golden Sun

There are games that came out this year like Paper Jam, Colour Splash and Owlboy which I'm interested in playing in the future but I'm thinking of going through my backlog and getting everything sorted there, trying to complete FFX, Xenoblade X and Golden Sun before making my way any further.

Only owning Nintendo consoles I wasn't particulary spoilt for choice this year. I only got one new game released this year, which was Lego Force Awakens. I think it's the best Lego game released since the original so I'm happy with that being my GotY.

Of Games I played this year, I'd have to vote Xenoblade Chronicles X due to the 98 hours of fun I got from it.
Ever since joining the original ONM I've been a huge Nintendo fan (specifically Zelda) and am looking forward to some great discussions. I was previously known as Lego Master

Pokémon Moon, fantastic game.

I don't actually recall buying much this year (that's a brand new game rather than remaster), I remember Bravely Second, Fire Emblem Fates, F1 2016. All of these are very good but not Pokémon Moon good.
