I think you need a boot disc to load pirated games or at least you did the last time I played one on mine.

Make sure you keep the console well ventilated/off carpeted floors as they overheat and die easily

I think some games require a boot disc while some don't. Been quite a while since I did anything with my DC :P. It's basically a giant paperweight for me .

There are a few ways to make selfboot ISOs, which are a lot less faff than a boot disc in the long run.

Yeah because putting in a disc in then putting another in after is a lot of faff.

to get burnt games working you need to either write a boot disc or burn special versions of them with a boot part added to the front.

I actually played quiet a bit of Online dreamcast. When it was first released you had to dial up to sega's number but then with one of the dream key discs you could change it to calling your own ISP. I was on an unlimited ntl dial up thing, you paid a set figure a month and dialled up and used it as much as you wanted for one fee.. in this way I played tonnes of Phantasy Star online and various other games... some older games wouldn't work in this way though Chu Chu rocket being one of them, it wasn't programmed to be able to deal with dialing an isp that wasn't the one programmed onto it or something.

Never played online on mine as I was on a crap dial up connection that cost a fortune.

I've seen people modding their Dreamcast to run games off an SD card.

You can still go on-line with the DC with a few games, thanks to private servers in most cases.

Isn't it hard to get hold of a broadband adapter these days?

I didn't think the Dreamcast had a Broadband adapter, the modem was something stupid like 33.6 Kb/s.

The Gamecube had an optional BB adapter but I don't think there were any games other than Phantasy Star Online that actually needed it.

The cubes Broadband adaptor can also be used for Lan/system link gaming, I think Mario Kart can use it in that way.

The cast had a broadband adaptor not sure if it was ever officially released here though.

The DC did get a broadband adapter in 2001 which will cost about £150 now on eBay

The standard dial-up is 56 or 33.6K depending on the age of your system & where you are in the world.

Got mine at launch so it had a 33.6K modem, had to replace it 8 months later after it died but had no idea they'd improved the modem specs to 56K.

It is the best console ever, your mad also you have few good games there, that Sonic Adventure is a real copy in a boot leg case.

I'm doing some dreamcast articles soon for it's 16th birthday on GNamer's website Gintendo where we write articles, reviews and the podcast goes up. It might be worth looking at as my first one is my Top 10 games for the system.

Wait, so my Sonic game IS real just in a fake case? Damn internet telling me different things :P.

And I will definitely have to check out your top 10 games list, I WOULD like to enjoy the Dreamcast but my collection of games for it doesn't show off why it's any good, and almost all the other games that tend to come up as being good are either on other systems or are Shenmue, which I can't sodding afford :P.

Most have been ported over the years to other systems but that could be said about most systems, one of the other reasons the DC is so good is what it did for gaming as a whole as most modern things started back on it.

I agree that the pad wasn't brilliant and the VMU wasn't particularly useful but the Dreamcast was a great if short-lived console

My Dreamcast top 10 in no particular order:

Shenmue (both parts)
Power Stone
Crazy Taxi
Metropolis Street Racer
Jet Set Radio
Skies of Arcadia*
Rez*
Chu Chu Rocket
Hydro Thunder (odd choice I know but I really liked it)
Sonic Adventure

* Played on other console port but included anyway.

If I remember rightly, the 56K modem was never released in Europe but our machines were compatible with them.
