Old stand alone retro games you wish had gotten sequels

Post by kerr9000 » Mon Apr 10, 2017 6:19 pm

Ok so this is a thread to talk about old stand alone retro games that you wish had gotten sequels.

I started thinking about this because I did some posts on my blog about Sega Games which they had never made sequels to, games which I either really thought deserved sequels or ones which I thought hey it was just plain silly business wise to not try and milk that idea just a little bit more.

For me one of the games I really wish Had gotten a Sequel is Alien Storm, sure its like Golden Axe with aliens but I liked it a lot and if Golden Axe got 3 mega drive games then arcade games and even a crappy modern title why did Alien Storm only get the one game? It was good enough to end up on Virtual Console type services and to be thrown on best of Sega Compilations.

So any old stand alone games any of you think should have had sequels

(and yes I know Alien Storm is sort of considerd to be a sequel to Alien Syndrome but I dont think it is not really)

I'd have liked to have seen Alpha Protocol get a sequel. I know the original tanked a bit but I enjoyed the game a lot and what they did with the formula; the character progression, choices that affected the narrative etc. Shame we'll never see one.

The World Ends With You. I was obsessed with this game at the time. I liked all of it: the setting, the characters, the story. The battle system was a little crazy, and in all honesty sometimes I just mashed random combinations because I couldn't focus on both screens at the same time, but that didn't affect my enjoyment of it.

That said, I'm not completely sure where the sequel should take the series, though I feel like it'd probably be better to introduce a new cast of characters.

I have never played The World Ends with you I wish I had but as I havent I cant comment on it really.

As for Alpha Protocol I agree there, the game was not perfect but I really enjoyed it, it was kind of like Mass Effect Spies, I could really have gone for another few slices of that.

Street Racer
Theme Hospital
Doshin The Giant
Bully

All great games, but are now largely forgotten.

What's even more annoying though, is that there have been some truly great franchises over the years which for some reason, just kinda stopped, series' like Burnout, Katamari, and F-Zero.

We also need a new Tony Hawk's, and by that i mean one which isn't rubbish.

Yeah I really agree on Kid Chameleon, thats on my list of sega games to write about that I think should have sequels (Ristar wasnt but proberbly should be).

Bully for me is good but its like a modern version of the old game school daze to a degree, I would love to see a new Theme Hospital or Doshin (not so much street racer).

Agree with this! I'm still bitter about the website countdown that turned out to be an iOS port, and then that ended with a sequel tease that has never gone anywhere :(

A new cast of characters with a broadly unrelated story would be the way to go.

Myself I would love a Skies of Arcadia sequel. Again I'd want it to be more of a spiritual successor, keeping the general setting/theme but with a new world and new characters.

One of my all time favourite games, i'd be happy with just an HD remaster, let alone a whole new story.

I could go for more skies of arcadia, I basically jumped for joy when the main character showed up in another game.

Was that Valkyria Chronicles or All Stars Racing Transformed?

The skies of arcadia track in transformed looks amazing

Doshin The Giant
I've still never played this. I passed it over many times when I saw it on the shop shelves for other things and I really regret it now. I do look for it from time to time but its always very expensive.

The problem was though, that Chrono Trigger wasn't even released in this country until it came out on handheld.

It was often included in various magazines and columns as an all time great, but back when it first came out, barely anyone had a chance to play the damn thing.

Same goes for Mario RPG.

I got mine pre-owned back in the day, and it worked fine.

Took ages to find a copy even then though, as for ages i was kicking myself after deciding not to grab a copy when WHSmith had a whole bunch of sealed ones on a shelf for a tenner each.
