Future Retro Holy Grail's

Post by kerr9000 » Fri Dec 19, 2014 11:24 am

So with the New consoles beginning to take over and people throwing out Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U games in trade towards newer stuff maybe it is time to stop and think about what games will be the popular ones in the future, what will be forgotten what will be remembered.

So what does everyone think? I am not necessarily saying which games have been the best more which will be sort after by collectors etc.

It's always tricky to judge when it comes to this sort of thing, with the GC era it was easier as some titles were pretty difficult to track down at release anyways (chibi robo for example), let alone years later.

Thinking back though, Bully: Scholarship Edition might prove something of a rarity as time goes on, as i don't think it was a particularly big seller on the 360, same goes for the Viva Pinata games.

Bully on the 360 despite being old still sells for like 25quid second hand so you might have a point with that one.

Need for Speed most wanted the 06 Version also seems to have held its second hand price despite its age, then there is The Lord of The Rings Battle for Middle Earth II, and the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games.

Another Code R for the wii may be one, that wonderful game seemed to slip under the radar a bit among people first time out. maybe even Excite Truck will be another.

Any exclusives which get released on the "last" generation in the next year or so, regardless of quality, are almost guaranteed to be difficult to get hold of in the future.

Yep thats often the case with a lot of machines, stuff which comes out after most people have jumped ship on to the next set of consoles can become quiet rare and valuable in later years as most people kind of ignored it at the time.

Nah, they're far too common, even now they aren't very desired. Another Code: R isn't even that good to be honest.

In terms of 'holy grails':
Wii:
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Sakura Wars: So Long my Love
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
The Last Story
Xenoblade Chricles
Klonoa
Naruto Shippuden Clash Of Ninja Revolution 3
Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's Master of the Cards
Inazuma Eleven Strikers
Kirby's Adventure
King of Fighters: The Orochi Saga
Samurai Shodown Anthology

All could possibly become more expensive or scarce in the future (I reckon King of Fighters and Sam Shodown will be really rare as they were not released in UK but in places like Italy).

Gamecube:
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Gotcha Force
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Mario Superstar Baseball
The Legend of Zelda: 4 Swords Adventures
Kirby: Air Ride
Naruto: Clash of ninja
Chibi-Robo
Evolution Worlds

Some of these are already silly. Naruto, Evolution and Gotcha Force are really uncommon.

Another Code: R recycles a lot of the elements from the first game and them doesn't do them nearly as well.

House of the dead overkill is on PS3 and PC, I don't see the wii version becoming rare.

I have a guilty confession with Need for speed most wanted o6. I have owned it 6 times and sold it 5. I kept getting it from carboots and facebook sellers for like 5quid and punting it on to various shops for mass trade in profit (at the right points I was getting 25quid trade in store credit on it... the least I got was like 17quid). Then when I realised I might not be able to do it many more times before I couldn't get ahold of it I ended up buying one for 15 quid and I am holding on to it.

I remember Skies of Arcadia: Legends being a real liverpool tart to find even when it came out. I had to hunt high and low to find a copy, eventually one turned up in my local Gamestation a fortnight after it's official UK release.

Could you imagine a day long from now when it'll be hard to come across a copy of Wii Sports? I almost gasp at the thought.

But yeah, it'll be the special edition versions that'll be the hard ones to find. Like The Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition on Gamecube or games with the official Nintendo Selects packaging and the Metroid Trilogy on Wii. Oh and the Super Mario All-Stars they did for the 25th anniversary.

I don't know much about the PS360 side of things, but on the Nintendo side there are a fair few:

Metroid Prime Trilogy
Xenoblade Chronicles
The Last Story
Pandora's Tower
The World Ends with You
Okami (not sure about this one, what with the PSN version)
Okamiden
Pokemon Conquest
Skyward Sword (I heard it didn't sell too well)
Kirby's Return to Dreamland
Super Mario All Stars
Fire Emblem games
NPC Pikmin 1 + 2
Phoenix Wright games
Tatsunoko vs Capcom

And I have none of them :P.

Crazy how expensive some games from last gen already are, even pre-owned (mostly in some cases as getting new is near impossible). I'm after Dragonball Z: Attack of the Saiyans for the DS and it's around £20 pre-owned most places if you can find it, and on ebay just the cart alone can go for £15. Currently playing it through my Acekard but I still wanna own it original.

As for anything else that will be expensive and sought after in the future, pretty much anything directly from Nintendo (Mario, Kirby, Zelda etc) always seems to remain at a high price. Making it a pain to get some Wii games I only ever played through modding my console that much harder to get hold of because I don't wanna splash out £15+ for a 7 year old game or whatever :p.

I think that the Skyward Sword/Gold remote bundle will become pretty rare at some point.

I think The Wonderful 101 would be a safe bet for a rare collector game of the future with how badly it sold.

the way Wii U is going a lot of its stuff could end up that way.

I have Wonderful 101 dont really like it but I am keeping it partly for this reason and to try it again.

If they ever release Fatal Frame 5 over in the west that could end up a very rare title indeed, as I imagine it would only get a limit print run.
