Sonic The Hedgehog Classic Trilogy

Post by Fabong » Fri Oct 24, 2014 7:11 pm

Which game from the classic trilogy is your favourite? Despite the name there are four games to choose from here-

Sonic The Hedgehog
Sonic The Hedgehog 2
Sonic The Hedgehog 3
Sonic & Knuckles

My favourite is Sonic 2, the zones are excellent in their variety and design, and it has one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. I'm also a big fan of the boss fights from this title.

So, which game from the 16-bit trilogy is your number one?

Easily Sonic 2. I mean they're all great but 2 wins in level design and soundtrack.

Definitely Sonic 3, I love the original Angel Island theme

Its either 1 or 2... I like 3 and Knuckles, I also like Sonic CD but the first two just mean more to me

Number 1 was just so pure and started it all

the second one had 2 player, I preferd the bonus stages and I think was an actual improvement.

The rest although good games felt like typical sequels I guess, just more and bigger etc

Sonic and Knuckles.

I've played that countless times.

Sonic 2. The music was so good in that game and I love almost every single level.....apart from Metropolis Zone. That can burn in a fire along with Tails' AI.

I love Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles but Sonic 2 holds a special place in my heart for being the first game I ever beat my dad on and for having my all time favourite boss battles.

Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles are such good games that it is difficult to pick between them. Every single level in Sonic 2 is golden (except for that confusing air ship). Sonic 3 was good but it had annoying stuff in it like the carnival night zone.

Sonic 2 is, was, and will forever be, my favourite game of all time. The music is just flawless.

Sonic 2's the best one, for sure. The original is kinda outdated and the level design in 3 & Knuckles is an absolute mess.

After years of getting Time Over because I was trying to time jumps on it, I found out the solution a good ten years after it came out. I can't believe how simple it was.

When you finally found out, was your reaction one of relief, joy or pure anger?

Mine was a mix of all three.

You know, I realised recently that the Trilogy really is the most 'complete' classic story in Sonic history. After that we had the Adventure games, and from there the current run that has little to do with the originals really besides a blue hedgehog that runs fast.

I'd love someone to do a mod of the original trilogy with cut scenes in the style of the old Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon fleshing out the story, because it is a complete story: Robotnik appears, encounters Sonic, gets beaten. Builds a doomsday satellite, it's destroyed, crash lands, and then he works on trying to get it operational again before it and he are defeated for good. Awesome.

You're quite right, it's a pleasingly cohesive whole. Even better is that they didn't even have to resort to cliffhangers, Sonic 1 feels complete in its own right, and Sonic 2 doesn't finish feeling like there's things you didn't see.

I would have liked to have seen maybe a little image still or short scene of Tails adding the new rocket to the Tornado.

To be honest, I always count Sonic 3 and Knuckles as one game. They were originally designed to be after all. For the sheer innovation of lock-on catridges and the scale of the game (14 Zones baby!), it is my favourite. Sonic 2's soundtrack is undeniably good though. (Sorry Michael Jackson)

Though in reality my favourite is Sonic 1 in 8-Bit.

Funny you should say that, because there are two fan games that fill in the blanks between the three. Sonic: Before/After the Sequel.

I always class them as one game too. The lock on cartridge blew my mind back in the day. And I felt so clever when I discovered that you can play the Blue Sphere stages if you put in Sonic 1 into Sonic and Knuckles.

I love the 8 bit Sonic games. The Jungle level was always my favourite, I loved the music.

Best overall soundtrack is definitely Sonic 2. But I have to give special mention to Hydrocity, Ice Cap Zone and Flying Battery Zone. Those tunes rock!

You actually get one bonus blue sphere stage if you plug any megadrive game in... different stages for different carts

At least it had some good music I guess. I admit to quite liking the Metropolis boss, even if it is pretty easy.

Sonic 2, so many memories of going to my friends house and playing this, I was so jealous that he had the Mega Drive at the time.
