kess i thought you were banned from doing this since last time you did it in an orderly and timely fashion

----------------------------------------

Game of the year:
Wii U GOTY: Splatoon (It's like the only Wii U game I own and I don't even have a Wii U!)

3DS GOTY: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (Can't believe this was at the beginning of the year! Feels like a lifetime ago.)

PS4 GOTY: Life is Strange (Multi-Platform but had me and my housemates laughing for the wrong reason. I'd rather not "go ape")

XBONE GOTY: None

PC GOTY: Undertale. (Metal Gear Solid 5 narrowly misses out on this.)

VITA GOTY: Olliolli 2 (It's the only vita game I played this year... Seeing as I playtested it...)

Most disappointing GOTY: Citizens of Earth (While the amount of voice acting is impressive it feels at times its been put together in something like RPG maker. Plus the loading times are a crime in the 3DS version.)

Worst GOTY: Meme Run

Best dev: Kojima

Best publisher: Nintendo (They haven't wronged me yet.)

Multiplayer GOTY: Gangbeasts (Yeah i know its not out yet but its amazing)

Best story: Undertale (Consistently impressive and it isn't "2deep4u" the story makes sense.)

Most wanted 2016: Zelda WiiU (Fates would have this spot if it was all combined onto one game. Persona misses out.)

Best new IP/original GOTY: Undertale (Came out of no where. Kinda want it to be left alone now. Like a good book.)

Best gaming platform: 3DS (Still such a solid system.)

Underrated GOTY: Valkyira Chronicles Re-release (PC release might of been last year but PS4 was out this year. feel its worth noting now. The engine beautifully scales with the upgraded graphics. If this doesn't count then I'll go withChroma Squad.)

Best visual design: Metal Gear Solid 5 (I'M ALREADY A DEMON, KAZ)

Best soundtrack: Metal Gear Solid 5 (Little Kids in America like. Much like best PC game, Undertale narrowly misses out on this.)

Iwata award: most fun GOTY: Undertale (A lot of awards have gone to this and while I'm not insanely crazy about the game I think that there's not many RPG style games that kept me smiling and hooked throughout.)

I was going to do this, then I checked and I only actually got 2 games this year. Majora's Mask and DR: Another Episode. I've not played MM yet and AE was rubbish.

No doubt that's why it got my most disappointing goty vote. It's still a fantastic game and I'm loving playing through it still, but you can tell it's a game Kojima never really wanted to make and in so many places it's a fantastic game but it's still one of the weakest MGS games we've had.

MGSV is one of the best games I've ever played. Very close to being goty.
I've still never been more disappointed with a game.

It's a 10/10 but should have easily been an 11+.

Mechanically it's easily the best MGS game we've ever had, and it's a fantastic game. The story is the weakest part though, and makes it feel like a different kind of game to the main MGS series. MGSV is more Peace Walker 2, compared to the main series which is very much a story driven game. MGS3 is probably still my favourite MGS game (it's pretty much as perfect a game as you can ever get) but MGSV is still fantastic. The online is also the best MGO to date.

Having said that, I haven't actually finished the game (I haven't even unlocked base invading yet lol too many side quests I'm like 50+ hours in). But that is more a combination of the game being a lot longer than previous MGS games for a single playthrough, and the climate in which it was released (a ton of good games at the same time, and I don't have as much time to play them any more).

i was definitely disappointed with it, though i dont know if it was most disappointing game of the year for myself. the weak story did drag it down but i still had a lot of fun with the mechanics over my 45 hour story run, and i keep meaning to go back to it to try and reach 100%. its a shame that its a game of "what if's" but for what its worth, what the game is, is a really fun MGS game that tried to be different to its predecessors and hit most of its marks in its gameplay. it really is just a shame about what it could have been in most other respects

I do plan on voting in these awards, just need to find a bit of spare time to think it through!

I agree with what's been said about Metal Gear Solid V. Gameplay wise it's fantastic and very hard to fault the actual gameplay, it's outside the gameplay where it starts to fall down. The story is almost a background thing, only popping up every so often (except it is the main focus from mission 25-31 which is a good thing) and inbetween you have so much filler missions where it's "go and extract this prisoner/official". Missions like that get boring, quickly, I miss the old style of MGS story telling where it's gameplay then long cutscenes and so on, made the story much better and you actually really understood/liked the characters. Next up is mother base, I quite liked mother base but as soon as you get your first FOB I despised it, realising that if I wanted everything I'd have to max out the first FOB (alongside mother base) and maybe more. Lastly (for now) is the almost forced online aspect of the game, nearly every time I go on it now it always reminds me about online developments, frankly I don't care one but about online stuff in MGS as for me it's always been a single player game and always will be, if anyone knows how I can turn off the online aspects I'd be pleased to know :)

MGS V is good, but for me it had to live upto (potentially surpass) Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater, it was a huge ask and it fell a way short. Need to replay MGS3 on the 3DS soon as I've not played it in ages.

Pretty sure you can go offline in the pause menu. You're locked out of the resources you have on your fob, but you also get a much faster idroid because every act you make on it has to ping the servers to check your eton mess hasn't been robbed.

The issue with MGSV is that people went in with absurdly high expectations, and as such were disappointed when it didn't exceed those expectations.

I've recently made it my motto to go in with the lowest expectations, that way I can be happier when the game exceeds my expectations by miles. Take HHD for example. Went in very skeptical, came out pleasantly surprised.

On the flip side I went into MKX with hugely high expectations, and it fell short for me in almost every aspect. Same goes for Life is Strange episode 5. I mean, it was a great ending, but compared to the previous episodes it didn't live up to the hype that much. It's not Don't Nod's fault, it's the fault of the hype culture.

As far as I know, that doesn't protect you from getting your stuff nicked though.

As I try to do this, I realise that the majority of the games I played this year were just me catching up on my backlog. And playing Paper Mario 64 for like the fourth time

Scapegoat wrote:The issue with MGSV is that people went in with absurdly high expectations, and as such were disappointed when it didn't exceed those expectations.
Well yeah, but the thing is you should go into a game from a franchise with those expectations. The game has a standard to live up to and with some franchises, like MGS, those standards are incredibly high. It's not approaching TPP with absurdly high expectations because honestly a series of games that has produced three games that are routinely described as examples of some of the best games ever made warrants those incredibly high expectations. That's the thing about something being disappointing, it doesn't mean the end product is bad, unenjoyable or not even in contention for GotY, it just means it doesn't live up to the hype or the precedence set for it. I mean gooseberry fool, I consider Bloodborne disappointing in some aspects because I was hoping for some elements that Dark Souls managed to nail but they simply weren't there or weren't as good in Bloodborne, doesn't stop it being my GotY.

It does if you just write it off and never go back online.
