Christmas Markets

Post by D.J » Tue Dec 16, 2014 1:50 pm

I love visiting Christmas Markets, but they do tend to vary in terms of size and quality depending on where you go (both at home, and on the continent).

My personal favourites to date have been...

Birmingham

Monschau

and (to my genuine surprise) Bristol.

My top purchases tend to be food items such as gingerbread or pretzels, but i do also find other neat items such as snowdomes.

Do you visit Christmas Markets? If so, which ones are your favourites?

The local Saturday morning market gets lots of cool stuff in for Christmas. Very small, but the quality of the goods are always exemplary.

Shopping centres i.e. Dundrum are also good.

One thing i do like about some of the markets i've visited, is the fact that if you buy a drink (whether it's gluhwein, or just hot chocolate), you also get to keep the neat little mug that it's served in.

I got me a blue one of these (not my pic) from Brum...

I stopped in by the Edinburgh market last Tuesday. It is very easily the closest I've come to enjoying Christmas.

My ex wanted to take me to the one in Birmingham, as that is where she lived, however we broke up well before Christmas and I can't say I'm too sorry to have missed going to the market, it sounds overly busy and hectic. Last week or two of college has been awful as everyone's been going into Town for Christmas shopping so I can only imagine a proper market would be much worse, especially if it's anything like Winter Wonderland.

Winter Wonderland was exceptional though, and i can see why it would put people off of such things.

The fact is, the majority of the markets i've visited are not like that.

In regards to Birmingham, the main market area (Victoria Square) isn't too bad at all (i had no trouble accessing the stalls), New Street tends to be pretty manic, but there are quieter alternative routes down to the Bullring anyways.

I went to the Birmingham German Market on Saturday, took me 30 minutes on the bus. Was really nice, had a nice walk around, didn't buy anything but I never do really. Was a pretty mild night as well. A bit bread and buttered of because we wanted to go to the top of the library to take a photo for my mates portfolio, got to the library at 4:59, one minute before they close.

Overall, 10/10 would go again.

I live in the centre of Bristol term-time, so I've been exposed to them. I like the smell of the various cooking things, it smells like Christmas somehow.

Also the hotdogs are pretty great.

But I could definitely go without, I don't think they're /that/ great.

Wrathy: Water's not just a drink. I mean, you can't have a bath in lemonade, wash the dishes in sprite or flush the toilet with irn bru.
