The Legend Of Zelda Thread

Post by Nintendonator3000 » Sat Oct 25, 2014 2:21 pm

Seeing as series threads are beginning to be made I thought i'd make one for my personal favorite - The legend Of Zelda!!! For anyone who isn't familiar with the series, the games are adventure/action focused with several puzzle elements in which you take the role of the hero Link on a quest to save Hyrule and the princess Zelda form the forces of darkness led by the demon king Ganondorf (though this formula has been known to change slightly in certain games). Quests usually involve trekking across several landscapes such as fields, volcanoes, and rivers whilst entering specific dungeons, riddled with enemies and puzzles as well as a boss who you can usually take down using items acquired in the dungeon such as the Bow, Bombs and Boomerang.

Ever since joining the original ONM I've been a huge Nintendo fan (specifically Zelda) and am looking forward to some great discussions. I was previously known as Lego Master

Definately one of my favourite series of video games, even if some of the puzzles have been too complex for me at times to the point where I've had to look up the solutions in guides or on the internet (I know, shameful on my part).

Perhaps it was due to Wind Waker's replay option, but I probably played that game more than any other to the point it was ingrained into my brain.

I have Wind Waker HD on my Wii U waiting to be played. No idea why I haven't started it yet.

Because you already played a much nicer looking version 11 years ago.

Also they got rid of the Tingle Tuner what's with that. Sure it was broken as hell but that was the fun of it

But yeah, Zelda is one of my favourite series of all time, and contains some of my favourite games of all time. To the point where if I was trapped on a desert island and could only have one game to play, it would be Link's Awakening (original, of course, because more glitches. In fact I'm pretty sure there are hundreds if not thousands of glitch worlds that could be mapped/explored in the game, which has always tempted me as a pointless and somewhat crazy side project).

I don't see any Faces of Evil or Wand of Gamelon in that list. Disgraceful.

In all seriousness my favourites are Majora's Mask, Skyward Sword and Wind Waker for best themes, overall awesomeness and best art style respectively. Can't stand Ocarina of Time, though. The Oracles games suck too.

The oracles game do not suck, why do you lie.

They consist solely of recycled assets from previous games and are completely unbalanced at times due to poor programming. Badly developed in comparison to all of the Zelda games prior. Thankfully Capcom redeemed themselves with Minish Cap (apparently).

The first Zelda game I played was Phantom Hourglass, £4 from CeX. Probably one of the best game purchases I've ever made, and lead me on to buy Spirit Tracks and a number of other games in the series.

Can we talk about how incredible A Link Between Worlds is game design-wise? If the Wii U Zelda follows in its footsteps while providing a good story and amazing art style, it'll be the best game in the series, no doubt.

I personally think Phantom Hourglass is the weakest entry in the series. I found the dungeons to be a bit boring and navigating the ship was always a pain.

But for £4, you got a decent deal.

Just thinking about it gets my hype levels to absurd amounts. An open world Zelda of today's standards could be something truly magical.

The Legend of Zelda
Where it all began. Not as entertaining as some of its successors but an important entry no less.

The Adventure of Link
Never played it.

Link to the Past
It's been outshone by its better successors but this one was amazing when it came out.

Link's Awakening
Never played it.

Ocarina of Time
Leaps the series into 3D. My first Zelda game. It's gooood but it's not quite Carling. The 3DS remake is much better. (Curse that water temple!)

Majora's Mask
One of my favourites. This game has such epic atmosphere.

Oracle of Ages
Never played it.

Oracle of Seasons
My first handheld Zelda. One of the best. Subrosia is the most exciting of all of Zelda's secondary worlds.

Wind Waker
One of the best. Very comical. Great artstyle. HD makes it even better.

Minish Cap
Lost in the swamp section. Don't know where to go next :?

Twilight Princess
Good game. Hate the bug-collecting sections (you know, the bugs we have to collect for the golden gods. Every single time.)

Skyward Sword
Playing it at the moment. Great story. Fi is not as bad as people say.

Link Between Worlds
The best yet. Best story, best characters, they really should make a sequel where we play as
Ravio Link

Currently revisiting Skyward Sword, as I didn't complete it back in 2011. I'm just past the fire sanctuary. After I complete SS, I'll probably revisit TP and then start HW.

ALBW is my favourite in terms of design but the story and art-style are kinda so-so. They clearly weren't the focus. Don't see why anyone would say it has the best story out of any Zelda, especially considering Majora's Mask exists. In fact, MM is kinda the opposite of ALBW for me. Really not a great game at all in terms of design, but a masterful one when it comes to themes, characters and story.

I agree it's one of the weaker games I've played - Zelda II at the very least before it - but it was incredible for me at the time.

I'd argue that ALBW has a decent story, but your comparison between that and MM actually really does make sense...

I'll admit I struggled to get into the oracles series. Although decent games, they aren't different enough from Link's Awakening to keep me interested and i'm currently struggling to find a reason to go back and complete oracle of ages. I do love the seasons/time mechanics though.

But the Dungeon themes in the Oracle games tho. Skull Dungeon still holds up.

I'd love Ninty to revisit that style of Zelda again. Imagine a 2.5D Zelda game made by RetroStudios.

Maybe it's just my liking of the more recent games, but I just can't seem to get into it. As suggested, maybe a new game based around that system would help me appreciate it.

Wind Waker was the first Zelda game I played, and it remains my favourite video game of all time.

I still haven't played A Link between Worlds because I was busy with Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem Awakening at the time, and then with Mario Kart 8, and now with Pokemon Omega Ruby and Super Smash Bros Wii U coming up, but I will get round to it eventually.
I'm also waiting for Majora's Mask to be announced for 3DS, because that's probably going to happen, right?

I also bought Link's Awakening on VC but didn't get very far into it.
