Fire Emblem - Waifu Edition

Post by mav » Mon Oct 27, 2014 11:34 am

How do the older games compare to Awakening?

I am loving Awakening but am getting towards the end of it, so will be looking for something else, are any of the others in the series worth playing?
Nintendo ID: Mav-i-am

Can usually be found playing, Mario Maker, MK8, MH3U, Splatoon.

I played Sacred Stones before Awakening. Good but not nearly as good as Awakening. Still worth playing if you like strategy, but lacks many of Awakening's key features.

Tl;dr of possibly poor explanation, opinions, possible slight mistakes and maybe a side dose of ranting incoming.

In my sure to be contested opinion, from the ones i've played; Radiant Dawn (FE10, direct sequel to 9) > Path of Radiance (FE9) = Fire Emblem (7, prequel to 6 but perfectly fine to play standalone) = Awakening (FE13, same world as FE1/2/3 but set far later) > The Sacred Stones (FE8) > Shadow Dragon (FE1 remake/FE11) > Binding Blade (FE6, unlocalised). But they're all worth playing, imo.

Fire Emblem pre-Awakening isn't such a...for lack of better wording, a casualised mixup of old ideas. Only Sacred Stones has an actual world map (iirc) while the rest are straight chapter-by-chapter affairs, making XP a limited and precious resource. Class changing is another thing that's mostly out, that having only been introduced in Shadow Dragon. Awakening's marriage system was an idea lifted from Genealogy of the Holy War (FE4) and so again something missing from most of the older games. As is the Avatar - 7 and 12 had them, but 7's wasn't playable and 12 didn't even get localised anyway (although there's an apparently excellent fantranslation - pretty much all the unlocalised FE games are more or less comletely fantranslated, iirc). Also there's no pair up system either, that was an idea new to Awakening. I'm very sure i'm forgetting more stuff, but that's prolly all the main ones at least.

Thanks to all this, actual battle strategy is more important in the older games, rather than in Awakening where it's more about how your squad is set up. You could just go level grind, change some classes around, whatever. Personally, i much prefer the older games - it's not like Awakening's that bad (it's pretty good) but it kinda felt like a bit of a bedfordshire clanger of the series in order to draw in more of the anime crowd (which is understandable tbf, considering it was either Awakening did well or the series hit the chopping block). The casual gameplay changes can mostly be ignored by playstyle, at least...the weaker story (especially during the middle part of the game) and mostly generic anime characters, though...urgh X_X

But, yeah, if you're gonna jump into the older games after Awakening i would suggest 7 first, for several reasons - to start with, it was the first Fire Emblem localised and as such is pretty newb friendly (you can't get more newb friendly than pretty much the first ten chapters all being a massive tutorial, ah la la Advance Wars), while still being pretty damn great imo. There's also that it's the easiest to get your hands on, thanks to it's release on the Wii U virtual console - none of the older Fire Emblems are easy to find nor cheap to buy (Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn especially - you could prolly buy a small moon with the money you'd need for those two these days, i'd imagine). I suppose if you have Sacred Stones from the 3DS ambassador program that's also a decent shout - although i don't rate it as highly, given it does have a world map like Awakening it might be easier to jump into from that.

Side note, i should really remember to get my hands on a copy of New Mystery of the Emblem one of these days...

She's up there, I'll give you that much. I prefer Nowi though. And Lucina's pretty good too. The fact she makes a phenomenal Dark Knight certainly helps.

What? She has a great personality and is a genuinely powerful character. The fact she looks like a young girl and can transform into a dragon is purely inconsequential to that fact.

From what I have played: PoR>7>4>8>Awakening>RD=6

Anyone who says RD is the best is wrong
I do like how wyvern knights are top tier though, Jill best girl
Also Awakening would be better if it wasn't a massive casualfest of a game.

Fire Emblem 7 and 8 are pretty good if you're looking for a game to play after Awakening. I think 7 is better, but 8 is probably better for a newer player as it's a little bit friendlier. They're both easy to get into though.

A lot of people also recommend Fire Emblem 4 and see it as one of the best Fire Emblem games, but I found it hard to play because I got so adjusted to the newer games.

PoR and RD are the best. Totally worth trading a small Moon for. I do miss my Moon, but those games were great. More people need to appreciate the great maps and loads of different and interesting win conditions opposed to rout and defeat boss which are the same thing to any good player.

Also.

Haven't plsyed awakening coz I have no 3ds.
I think path of radiance is one of the best games in the series. Shame it is going to take me some serious cash to get it back.
