Surprised to see such a hostile response. If you don't think it's worth it don't buy it (and wait for the second pack, which is part of the same cost). Trials of the Sword is the main feature of DLC pack 1 and it's a great addition - everything else is just bonus content.

The path through the game is a fun feature and could easily have been a free update for everyone, but I'm also glad it wasn't in the original game - it would have changed the way I played. It's much better as something you only see late on or after completion.

Similarly with the extra costumes and masks, I think the base game would be made worse with them available from the start if it's your first time playing.
Agreed.

What about the Trials of the Sword?
Fair, but not currently worth £18.

They we'rent even in development until after the base game released, so how can you argue for the inclusion of content that didn't exist at the time.

Hero's Path though, given the game was tracking our movements the whole time anyway, is a valid point of contention - or maybe it was a tool primarily used for development that wasn't entirely removed. Either way I feel my money has been well spent assuming that DLC Pack 2 delivers.

I get the impression from a few on here that you think you're paying £17.99 for the Trials of the Sword DLC only.

You ain't.

Just to make it clear - £17.99 gets you a Bonus set of treasure chests (which they did on announcement + Japanese Voice audio - technically this is free in an update though). Then you have DLC Pack 1 which has just been released and DLC Pack 2 which is out towards christmas time. You don't pay EXTRA for DLC pack 2 - it's just not available yet as they're still working hard on this.

Paying now nets you Trials of the sword and all that comes with it as discussed - but you'll get the new story content and other extras when DLC pack 2 comes out later in the year without additional any additional charge. It's like an investment for more of your time in the game in the future by paying up now.

It's more or less like what they did with Mario Kart 8 packs on the Wii U - they came in 2 bundles and release 6 month apart (except you could pay for both separately upon release or together) - I'm guessing a lot of people opted for the latter which is why this is being implemented like this in Zelda as one big seasonal pass expansion.

Tbh I agree - DLC pack 1 is not worth £17.99 by itself - but that is not all the content you are paying for. If you wanted to wait until DLC Pack 2 comes out in the winter and find out if it's is all worth the £17.99 in the end, then that's fair enough and totally up to you.

Got the DLC, haven't touched the trials yet, doing the sidequests first. So far they're a little disappointing. So far it's just been 'go to this location'. They would have been nice during my playthrough, but now that I've almost finished everything it's like, eh... Hopefully the trials will be good tho.

The second set of rooms were pretty interesting, but the trials themselves are kind of samey.

I think that's probably a limitation of the game's combat and enemy variety rather than uninspired room design - they mix up pretty much everything with terrain, elevation, weather, lighting, and enemy types.

The rooms are fine, but having nothing but a combat gauntlet for DLC 1 is piss poor.

Made it through the final trials on my first attempt, using just 3 ancient arrows - 2 for the Lionels and the other on the remaining guardian turret only to finish in style as I jumped off my horse.

Think I took the most abuse from the Frost Talus and the odd guardian skywatcher, but other than that it's pretty manageable if you plan accordingly. Deflecting beams is especially gratifying.

Well. 5 months later and I've FINALLY BEATEN THIS GAME!!!

Final Boss/Ending: Well that certainly felt epic. Easy yes, but epic. The first form in a way is disappointing as it's really just a bigger version of one the over bosses, though the fight was fun, it felt great reflecting the beams back at him with the Hylian Shield. I also would've preferred to fight him with full health, but oh well. Then the second section was just awesome even if there was no difficulty at all. Leaping up for the final light arrow shot was very satisfying. I liked the ending too. Would've preferred to see a credits montage of the various characters celebrating the destruction of Ganon ala Ocarina of Time, but it did bring Link and Zelda's story to a nice close.

So overall, it's one hell of a game. Not much I can say that hasn't already been said. In 135 hours of gameplay I somehow never got bored, and it's definitely up there with my greatest gaming experiences.

Not sure where they go next. The open world Zelda really was a success, yet there's still a lot I missed from the more classic style of game. Perhaps somewhere in the middle? Either way, I'm exited for whatever comes next.
Ever since joining the original ONM I've been a huge Nintendo fan (specifically Zelda) and am looking forward to some great discussions. I was previously known as Lego Master

Jesus Christ it's been 5 months. I waited nearly 3 years from the original announcement for this and it felt like decades.

These 5 months felt like days.

Decided to come back to this since I never finished everything. Finished the master trials. Was pretty cool, certainly was fun trying to overcome stuff with no armour, though felt a bit silly beating all the lynels with guardian arrows. It gives you like 10 of 'em so was quite easy to clear some of the 'trickier' stuff. Oh well.

Decided to give in and look at guides for the remaining side quests and such, and I realised why I was having such a hard time finding the last of them. Apparently some of the side quests require other side quests to be completed first, and on top of that, some of them can only be found/started at certain times of the day. To anyone that has completed the game without a guide, kudos to you. Apparently there's a side quest at
the Forgotten Temple
but I searched the area thoroughly and did not find anyone to start the side quest which must mean it's dependent on time or other side quests to be completed first, but
other than one shrine at the end, there's literally no other reason to return to this place. I went through and killed all the guardians and found nothing. So to expect players to go back to a seemingly deserted area at a specific time or progress point for a side quest seems a little retarded
. Still, going around and finishing up side quests has been fun, even if I don't have the pleasure of stumbling upon them myself.

The side quest at the Forgotten Temple actually tells you when it activates. Sounds weird, but you'll find out eventually.

Yeah, it's not really a side quest. The game tells you to go there when you complete all 120 shrines.

Picked this up at launch and have put the hours in with no sign of being bored (I do kind of suck at this game though)

All towers activated, four dungeons done and 80 odd shrines complete - making progress now. Meeting Ganon soon :D

Good to hear you're still enjoying it, heck when I've completed the story if Mario & Rabbids (meaning my Switch will be without a new game till Mario Odyssey) maybe I might get round to finally starting this on my Switch, no idea if you need to have completed the story to do the Champions Ballad DLC, better safe than sorry though :)

One of my brothers has just gotten himself a Switch with Zelda, he's enjoying it so far although I think he's still on the Great Plateau.

It's sounding like it's a continuation of the main story, so you possibly will have to have beaten it. I'm going with the assumption that you need to and that it'll be throwing in main story quests after the final boss.

Nobody knows for sure though.

I'm Ganon-match ready, but I've decided to drag this out a bit longer, maybe sorting a few more shrines etc, before taking on Ganon. I'm not a completionist anymore and I don't do DLC (except Mario Kart and [weirdly] Assassins Creed Syndicate), so will probably end-up not returning to this much after the credits roll (assuming in this Zelda game you can even pick this up after beating the main story??) and I'm no where near ready to not have this game in my life yet.

-----------------------------

I'd be interested to hear from anyone that's played both versions - which is the definitive version of this game? The Switch presumably looks better and has a better frame rate - how does the U (i.e. the system this game was originally intended for) handle this game and are there any advances to playing on the U over the Switch?

Can't speak for how the Switch handles it but on Wii U it runs well enough, only frame rate stutters I've experienced are in towns and when there are multiple explosions going on. Other than that I've had no issues with it.

I've only played it on Wii U currently and it was a very smooth experience for the most part with a few slow downs when in towns, explosion and the odd Moblin encounter.

Once I've completed Mario and Rabbids (very nearly onto world 4) I'll be starting Zelda on the Switch. This'll tide me over till Mario Odyssey releases :)
