Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

The game is out on Tuesday 29th, but my copy of the collector's edition arrived today. God bless you ubisoft store!

Essentially Mario + Rabbids is a turn-based strategy crossover game between the two franchises. And yes it's basically xcom - in the best of ways. I'm about two and a half hours into it and it's really good so far, and easily living up to my expectations. Combat is fun, quick and strategically deep. Presentation is top notch, definitely living up to the Mario name. It's clear this was made by Mario fans with tons of detail and references. The review embargo is yet to lift, but from my first impressions I expect this to review really well.

I got the collector's edition, which comes in a gigantic box thanks to the 16cm mario rabbid figure. It is actually pretty weighty and well painted, I'm happy with it. Perhaps more excitingly it also comes with the soundtrack, which is composed by Grant Kirkhope (of classic Rare fame, amongst other things).

Anyone else planning on getting the game? Happy to answer any questions now that I own it!

My copy turned up as well, not started it yet though! Really surprised as Amazon pre orders don't normally come till the day, reckon I only got it early due to it being a bank holiday.

Just started it and my goodness is the music good :) I'd say it's got hints of Banjo in there but I'm just going to say that's Kirkhope. I'm just about to start world 1-2 but I get the feeling it's going to be a really enjoyable game to play. Not really played anything similar in gameplay to this (well I've never played XCOM) so it's certainly something different for myself at least.

The idea of a Mario x Rabbids game sounded terrible (well anything with Rabbids in sounds terrible) but this game looks really good, I like turn based games and love the Mario world so its a game I will probably get at some point, its good to see what people on here think of it

This game has completely reversed my opinion on Rabbids, they fit here perfectly.

I'm in world 2 now

Finished world two, which means I'm about halfway through the story I believe. The two world bosses have both been excellent.

I'm still really enjoying the game, it's keeping me engaged completely. It has the classic Nintendo design (Ubisoft obviously took notes) of always introducing new mechanics (be it map gimmicks, enemies or playable characters) that means the gameplay always stays fresh. The exploration and puzzle solving between battles is well balanced and breaks up the combat without feeling like padding - especially as you can run through to the next battle very quickly if you're not looking for secrets.

It's surprising how integral movement is to battles. Obviously they thought about how best to incorporate platforming of a sorts with it being a Mario game, and it wouldn't be much of an exaggeration to describe the game as strategy platforming. You rarely want to be moving your characters individually - it's all about chaining together the movement through dash attacks and team jumps to maximise damage and traverse around the maps.

This chaining of attacks and multitude of movement options lends in to the game encouraging and rewarding aggressive play. Along with the frequently low turn limit this means battles are quick to play out but take time in the planning to come to the optimal strategy. It's a way of playing that's really fun.

So far I'm up to the Petey Piranha boss of world 1, got firmly beaten by it as well! Will give it another go tomorrow, really need to try and improve my tatics in battles though as I seemed to have scraped through one of the levels and done reasonably OK in the rest. I'm hesitant to put it on easy mode after my first defeat but I'm kind of glad it's there with how easily the boss dispatched me and my team.

I'm actually looking foward to this game. When they announced it I thought at first that it was a horrible idea, but the gameplay footage totally converted me. Kind of hesitant to buy it full price though in case it drops quickly.

Finished world 3, the boss is great. In fact the whole world was great, I liked the environment design especially.

Looks like a weird combination that actually works, reviews seem largely positive.
Hopefully more people will like the Rabbids now.

That's the boss I'm aiming to beat this evening, didn't get chance to give it another go yesterday.

Edit, beaten that boss now, took me a couple more goes but I got there in the end :)

Caved in and got it last night and I've been playing through a fair bit this morning. I'm currently about half way through the first world and I'm really enjoying it, yeah it's similar to Xcom but it does enough stuff to distance them apart. Soundtrack is amazing too, reminds me of Yooka Laylee soundtrack tbh.

Grant Kirkhope did yooka-laylee too so it makes sense. Glad you're enjoying it!

I just beat the (probably) final boss at lunch. What a great game, and I've still got plenty to do in it.

Apparently there is an update out today that adds an extra scene on beating the game, so I might have to replay the final chapter to see it.. It was actually just the day one update I already got on saturday

Just about to try the boss of world 1, those Rabbids who look to carry a slab around can really wreak havoc on your team if you're not careful, didn't realise just how much damage they'd cause. Might finally get around to buying some new weapons when I beat world 1, been hesitant to do so this far.

The first ultimate challenge... goddamn. These might take me a while.

Of the regular challenges I only have one left - it's a 1 turn reach the areas puzzle that I just can't work out. I also need to go back to the first world to find the final chest that I'm missing.

This game is fantastic. So glad that I picked it up. Just had my first game over screen, at the first big boss. Thought I'd beat him too, then he went all Nintendo on me and gave himself 3 lives.

And I also love the fact that it's quite challenging too. And the open world bits remind me of the snes Mario rpg.

Got to the mid boss of world 2 last night, naturally got beat by it. Definitely getting a Twinrova vibe from it. Decided I'll probably complete the main portion of the game first before going back to do challenges and get all the chests, at least this way I'll have all of the extra powers so I should only need to go through each world another 1 time.
