There definitely were good times!

Post your favourite SONM memories, people you appreciate, best threads - funny eton mess welcome. Believe it or now this place was special to me and I'll miss her. I hope we go out on a high.

Thanks and goodbye friends x

Lets try to keep to highlights that reflect well on us all, yeah?

My favourite highlights are probably the two GAAW Christmas projects, we have some genuinely great artists among us

it does make me really sad we might not ever know what happened there :( CC was sweet and (mostly) stable until that day and then just went off the rails. of course the obvious answer is she said some naughty words and couldnt own up to it

but ye to say once again. a lot of friends. i see like various (s)onm people every year now and i dont think ive had one bad experience with them. minus old dready of course

Well i'm certainly not going to disagree with that.

You weren't the only one though, there was a time when the inmates really were running the asylum.

Favourite SONM moment is non-existent but hey ho. I just remember eton mess members that continued over from ONM, so seeing them still getting slammed down is a highlight for me.

I'm not sure if you are both referring to a specific incident or just in general (I don't care by the way, so please don't feel you have to answer)- but I thought you was very ok from what I remember.

FWIW I thought it was nice decision from the likes of you and Pokemons part where you decided to step down as mods - because you felt you were too busy with work and other things to mod properly rather than stay green but become very inactive.

------------------------------

I liked all the serious / debate threads; the politics, the gun laws, the robot feminism and the U.S election threads. I really appreciate the threads where people have puts lots of effort in them like Kerrs 150 SNES games, the Flag thread and Highlights review thread.

The Argos thread is the thread that genuinely made me smile the most. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1051, can we unlock it / start a new one as our swan song?

It's been a great three years in general. Though a true highlight would be me becoming more active in the community by taking part in several of the tournaments and other things that were running. The GAAW Christmas project was fun to do, and trying my best with the Scenes We'd Like to See game - the only forum game I think I've played.

I feel like DJ is either referring to the bad April Fools we once did which fell completely on its face (highlight wars or whatever) or is just generally being a bitter old lemon. For my part I enjoyed my time as a mod immensely and see it as a time of immense personal growth where I changed a lot as a person in every possible way. Sure. I didn’t always get it right, but I started off as a gooseberry fool 14 year old with glorified janitorial powers on an online message board - I’m not sure what else you’d even expect tbh.

I'm not going to dredge up specific incidents from years past (That april fools was legendary in it's awfulness though), but there was a time when virtually none of the mod team had a brain cell between them, and demonstrated as such on a pretty regular basis.

Please don't take it personally though Wraffy, your mod skills may have occasionally sucked, but you're still a good person, and someone i have a lot of respect for.

It’s always worth remembering that we were left to our own devices a lot, though, and without significant powers to actually do anything to clean the board. It improved a lot when we got banning powers in 2010 but before then we were effectively just firefighters and had to react to events rather than being able to stop anyone. Sometimes bans could take days or weeks to come through, all we had were effectively PMs to tell people to stop and manual tracking of who we spoke to and when, and the power to lock threads. That was basically it. We didn’t have the tools for the job, couldn’t do anything to stop elements of the community which were ultimately not a good influence, and I think in many cases (certainly on a personal level) I saw getting close to the cliques as the best way to be able to control what they posted. A lot of the time on the various spin offs or whatever there was a lot of soft moderation and influencing people into not posting something that was truly outrageous - which might have looked bad to outsiders but was actually an achievement in its own right because it could have been many times worse.

On the original ONM forum, there were times when we had people spamming child porn or gory suicide pictures all over, and there was nothing any of us moderators could do but delete their posts as they made them until an admin showed up in the morning. Overnight, we were effectively powerless. Given this was 2006, the moderator staff was just a bunch of teenagers and college students, and the admins weren't around a lot (except for Chris Scullion and Lewis Somerscales) so it's a miracle we kept the forums going for so long.

That one time we had a Splatoon team. That's my highlight, because it was genuinely lots of fun playing with SupaWaluigi, shy guy 64, and Yubel. We actually won some games.
