Vaporwave

Musically, vaporwave is a type of plunderphonics - music that heavily samples other music - the specific kind of music it plunders is old commercial and pop music from the early 90s.
Image
Artistically, vaporwave is a collection of old low-res 3D graphics like you'd see in Myst or AOL combined with ancient architecture/art and japanese characters - all of this and the music are done to give a feeling of nostalgia. Some would also argue there is an alien feel, but the word I like to describe it with more is dreamlike.
Image
Philosophically, it's supposed to be some offshot of the punk movement, with the subject being corporate consumerism.

What are your thoughts on vaporwave?

it's just a phase, everyone will have forgotten about it by next year, people have already basically forgotten about it. You know, like how Moombahton was a huge deal for like 15 minutes in 2011.

With that being said, when I'm really bored I sometimes make vaporwave under the alias of ロンドン SKY TREE 20XX

I like Especia. They're doing something slightly more interesting than just slowing down Diana Ross b-sides and trying to pass it off as original compositions. They're not /exactly/ vaporwave since (as far as I know) they aren't sample driven but they're aesthetically and aurally similar. But they've got a nice japanese 80s throwback style thing going on, as opposed to just doing a thing for the sake of doing a thing.

(no, i don't buy that this is some kind of anti-commercialism punk movement, even miley cyrus has been using old CGI demos in her music videos for over a year now)

Just Spotified vaporware to get someone's playlist and I've discovered a band called 18 Carat Affair, which sound pretty good!

EDIT: Now I've discovered CYBERREALITY, which sounds weirdly like Sonic Adventure music.
