Star Trek

Post by Warmij » Thu Jul 02, 2015 3:23 pm

I've just started watching Star Trek: The Next Generation (it's on US Netflix right now) and I have to say it's probably the best sci-fi I've ever watched. Picard is my new fav MC. I plan to watch The Original Series after it (I only saw a few episodes of the first season before and it was okay). I know there's also Voyager, Deep Space 9 and Enterprise although I'm not really sure which of them are worth watching and which aren't.

So talk about all things Trek here I guess

I thought about watching some Star Trek once but then I looked into it and there's like a billion different series and I couldn't be bothered to work out what I was meant to watch.

I watched those two new films though and Star Trek fans love them, right?

There is:

The Original Series - TOS (3 seasons)
The Next Generation - TNG (7 seasons)
Deep Space Nine- DSN (7 seasons)
Voyager- VOY (7 seasons)
Enterprise - ENT (3 seasons)

Those worth watching are (general consensus not mine): TOS, TNG, DSN. Some of VOY and ENT are good, but are generally seen to fall short of the previous three. TOS and TNG are mostly the same in story progession, each episode is generally not related to any other, sometimes you get mentions of things that have happened before but it's not vital to know for the story. However DSN is very arc based, and also seen as much darker and for some that makes it the best Star Trek series.

You also have the ten original movies, I'd recomend the first four movies, the 6th movie and then one of the TNG only films is good but I forget which one.

Following this you have the two new reboot movies, both are worth a watch but are vastly different to TOS

The only Star Trek stuff i've seen are the two JJ Abrams movies, i really should try and see some of the earlier films too when i get a chance.

I really liked DSN. A friend of mine reckons that it's not Star Trek, because they're not boldly going anywhere. As hilarious as that is, the aforementioned darkness gave it shades that other Star Treks did not have.

My dad is a Trekkie and he got me into Voyager and it is gooseberry fool awesome! Simply because the storyline is so removed from the other series.

Didn't Abrams not even like Star Trek? Thought that was a lot of why Trekkies hated the new films, since they were so different to the original TV series'.

Not sure he disliked it, just wasn't interested in it, and didn't care much for the original tv shows and movies I believe, and compared to TOS and the good TOS movies the reboots are pretty poor, but as generic sci-fi films they're good fun, and worth a watch for some parts

Yeah, just saw a thing where he was being interviewed about them by Jon Stewart. They're great films, Zachary Quinto as Spock is cool and stuff.

The new Star Trek films are weird because they're barely Star Trek, they're just standard sci-fi movies

I'm currently 45 mins into the first film of the two newest Star Trek films and so far it's pretty good.

TNG is a very good show i've seen less than 20 episodes but I really enjoyed what I've seen so far, the recent JJ Abrams movies pale in comparison though, they seemed closer to Star Wars movies anyway.

Figured y'all might like this crowdfunded fan film. Looks really well-made for a fan film.
Thank you.

I have seen every episode of trek including the original pilot and the animated ones ... Most of the reason for this is the main thing I do with my dad as father son time is to watch Sci Fi , so this, planet of the apes battlestar galactica etc

The classic Trek series is cool as long as your not the type who is put off shaky old effects, if you can see beyond that and see it for the stories its good. If you cant then I would recomend bypassing this and either going to the original films or to the Next generation. Of the original films I would possibly even bypass the first one. It is from a time when they just started being able to do crazy special effects and its just a wild effects piece with a fairly drawn out boring plot... So maybe best to start on the 2nd film and either watch the episode space seed from the original series just for background or at least read about it films 2,3 and 4 are excellent ...4 is in my oppinion the best trek film made.

Personally I'd watch the first film just for the experience, as it may not be great but it's an experience for sure
