Your top 10 animated films

Post by IronHide » Mon Oct 19, 2015 1:59 pm

Can be anything from Disney to Studio Ghibli, Pixar and beyond.

My personal top 10 are (I'll add some comments later on)

Ghost in the Shell - This was the first 'adult' animated film I saw, I love the gritty near-future dystopian setting and the interesting and somewhat philosophical storyline about artificial intelligence and the effects that technology has on society.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Transformers: The Movie - This film has no right to be so good, they could have made any old eton mess and it would have sold but instead they decided to make a great film with a great cast (featuring Eric Idle, Leonard Nimmoy and Orson Wells to name a few) and brilliant rock/metal soundtrack, loved it as a kid and still love it at 34.

Ratatouille

Akira

Spirited Away

Porco Rosso

Wall-E

Robin Hood

The Wind Rises

Listed them alphabetically because trying to order them from favourite to least is too hard. Also only gone with one per franchise.

Chicken Run
Despicable Me 2
Monsters, Inc.
One Hundred and One Dalmatians
Shrek 2
Tangled
The Emperor's New Groove
The Great Mouse Detective
The Lion King
Toy Story 3

A top 10 really isn't enough for me because I love so many animated films.

The Iron Giant's in there somewhere. I'll have to think about the others for a bit.

I gave it some more thought and realised that I'd have to break it down into all kinds of top tens involving eastern animation, western animation, short films, feature length etc. before I could even begin to build a list I was happy with

But that's a lot of effort so in the mean time here's an aesthetically pleasing 3x3 for your viewing comfort featuring the first nine (full length films) to come to mind

I've spent ages trying to select just 10 films and I still can't decide this is too difficult.

Akira
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie
Ghost in the Shell
Grave of the Fireflies
How to Train Your Dragon
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Spirited Away
The Castle of Cagliostro
The Lion King
Tom and Jerry: The Movie DEAL WITH IT

This is tough, but I think that top 10 works at least as a top 10

Only because they never made that Samurai Jack film I was promised

Forgot to give honourable mentions to Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, the greatest Scooby-Doo film of them all.

Something I intend on doing more is appreciating some Japanese anime. But at the moment I dabble now and again with animated films and classics feature heavily .. therefore, alphabetically:

How to Train your Dragon
Jungle Book
Lady and the Tramp
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
Robin Hood
Simpsons: The Movie
Team America World Police
Watership Down

Can part real - part animated films count? If so ..
Bedknobs and Broomsticks & Who Framed Roger Rabbit? would complete my list.

if not then possibly
Kung Fu Panda
Wreck-it Ralph

Also honourable mentions to Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wall-E & The Lorax

Wishing my SONM friends a very happy & successful Q3 in gaming

In that case I recommend the 1988 stop-motion/live action Alice because it is wonderful and more people need to see it
