A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away...

Starting out as just one film that had everything going wrong and everyone feeling as though it wouldn't be a success, to a massive blockbuster that turned itself into one of the most cherished series ever. From 1977, the world was born. And from that moment on, that world has expanded massively. Books, comics, TV Series, parodies, crossovers, games, LEGO, other merchandise - even its own official fan convention. All of these combined create one cohesive world.

First, A New Hope [simply known as Star Wars on initial release] and Splinter of the Mind's Eye, the then planned sequel before the first film really took off. Then the got the comics by Marvel. Then Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Dark Horse took over comic duties, and the prequels had just begun. And so did the first fan convention. The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, then the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars series to bridge the gap until Revenge of the Sith. Then in 2008 a new Clone Wars series adding more depth to that time period. Unfortunately, that had to end, though it's stories still continue. And it had to end as Disney became the new owners of LucasFilm. And thus, Rebels began. And EA got the games license. And Marvel have the comics back in their hands. And the all important - Episode VII. The new trailer lands this Friday, as fans all over eagerly await it. And EA have decided to give fans their wishes with a new Battlefront [which has been cancelled and resurrected more times than any other Star Wars game, and possibly any game ever, in total]. News of that will more than likely follow at Celebration Anaheim - coming April 2015. Also expected there is more news on Episode VII.

And so, here is the thread. Film news, game news, book or comic news - pass it on here. And if you really want the scoop on news, the Star Wars Insider magazine has exclusive interviews and insights every month. Anyway, that's enough of that, let the discussion begin.

Discussion of the Times
The new teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode VII - The Force Awakens is up.

I first saw Star Wars thanks to my brother lending me his old VHS tapes sometime around 1995.

I knew nothing of the plot back then, and so the events of episode 5 in particular were a genuine surprise for me, which was nice.

A horrifically overrated franchise, although The Empire Strikes Back pretty much nails the formula for the perfect family adventure film. The prequels are absolutely shambolic, convoluted messes - it's amazing that people find the boring politics within the films 'fun'.

Few decent games have come about as a result of the series though - the Jedi Knight's, KOTOR, Battlefront, Republic Commando. I'm interested to see what Abrams does with the sequel trilogy - it's obvious he's going to be doing them a lot more like the originals, which can only be a good thing.

But the prequels ARE bad. I don't see how that's arguable.

He praised the original trilogy. I don't see what the issue is.

My 3 favourite star wars characters:

1 Han Solo
2 Salacious Crumb
3 The Sand Person that shot Annakin Skywalker's pod racer .. or the Jawa that said 'Buteeni' in the original.

My All time favourite Star Wars films -

1 Empire Strikes Back

The third one was alright though.

Better than the first two prequels, sure, but a polished turd is still a turd.

It's literally just a case of it not being bad as Episode I or II. It's still incredibly messy, definitely just as boring.

I've always had the Star Wars movies on either VHS or DVD for as long as I can remember, I vaguely recall continually watching the Pod Race and Qui Gon+Obi Wan vs Darth Maul when we had the VHS. Then we got some special edition of the originals and then realised where I had been going wrong.

Best Star Wars Character

HK 47

The original trilogy is superb, the prequal trilogy is ok, out of the prequals I find Phantom Menace the least worse.

I love Star Wars though :D They just need to release a new and original Star Wars game now, been too long since KOTOR :(

Funnily enough, there was an article about KOTOR in the latest Star Wars Insider. Talking about how the game first got into production in the first place.
Also, it featured an article about fifty reasons why the prequels weren't as bad as people think, and about a quarter of what was said are reasons why people think the prequels are bad. Each to their own, I guess.
Though my favourite character has to be Darth Maul, followed closely by Obi-Wan.

I must have seen the original 3 about a trillion times. When I was a kid I'd sit and watch all three, then watch them again and again after school. Gave me something to do, and meant I wasn't in my parents way. Super-hyped for the next film, just dubious that J.J. is directing it...

Wow. Just wow. That really sets the tone of the film. It seems a new big bad has risen.

looks alright.
Not much to go on but still... yay!

Can't be any worse than the prequels :-)
Don't quote me on that

Seems alright. Still reserving judgement.

Kinda wish there wasn't that out of place bit with the wacky CGI droid, but hey, can't win 'em all.

Can't say too much about it but the new Stormtrooper helmets look cool and now the Sith have Henrys Beam katana from Nmh

Star Wars just tends bypasses all the negativity in my brain. Trailer was pretty exciting though obviously not on episode 1 level. But all I really needed was the millenium falcon as the theme kicked in to feel hyped.

Looks friggin' rad. The goofiness of the original trilogy with modern production values? Count me in.

Trailer was pretty hype, don't really like how they've taken Episode VII out of the title but whatever.

How could anyone not like that? If anything, I'd rather they just called it The Force Awakens; no Star Wars at all.
