Film of the Year

Post by Robbie » Mon Dec 29, 2014 8:48 pm

With the years end almost before us, there is one clearly important question to be asked. What was the film of the year? So I made this thread to ask you.

So, post 5 films from this year which you thought were brilliant in a list and 5 films which you thought were the worst in a list, like this:

Film of the Year
1.
2.
3.
4.
5

Worst Films of the Year
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

The first film on your list will earn 5 points, the second earning 4, the third earning 3, the fourth earning 2 and the fifth earning a solitary point. The points will be counted up and the film with the most points will be victorious.

Get voting.

5. Boyhood (Richard Linklater, USA)
My initial feeling after seeing Boyhood was that it fell just short of being a masterpiece however a few months on and I'm less inclined to shower it with such hyperbolic praise. It still has some superb moments and I do think it captures something of what it means to be, admittedly in a very specific context, an adolescent growing up in the 00s but towards the half-way mark it loses its way and becomes far too ponderous.

4. Under the Skin (Jonathan Glazer, UK)
Again, i felt much more passionately about this film just after I watched it and the power of the film has become a bit watered down now. I would like to rewatch it before making any judgement though. I still think Scarlett Johansson was very good and the atmosphere was incredibly haunting.

3. A Touch of Sin (Jia Zhangke, China)
One of the most important directors working in film today. This wasn't his best work but still very good.

2. The Golden Dream (Diego Quemada-Díez, Mexico)
This came out of nowhere, which may be the reason I loved it so much. Amazing Mexican film about a group of teenagers making a perilous journey from a life of poverty to the USA. Incredibly brutal but also very beautiful. The fates of the individual characters are quite harsh but the film doesn't bother lingering on how hard life is for them, which I really liked.

1. The Grand Budapest Hotel (Wes Anderson, Germany/UK)
I'm not a fan of Wes Anderson to be honest. I think his films are really irritating, but this one just blew me away.

I don't really go to the cinema much, so I haven't seen too many duds, but there was one.

God's Pocket (John Slattery, USA)
Really awkward and embarrassing experience, spent most of the film looking at my watch. Such a good cast as well, Philip Seymour Hoffman, John Turturro, Eddie Marsan. The conversations in this film are terrible, just meandering and unrealistic.

Was Godzilla this year or last? I think I vote for that. I have trouble remembering what I saw this year and whether it was possibly the year before.
