Penguin Little Black Classics! <80 Books At 80 Pence!>

Post by Fabong » Sun Apr 05, 2015 5:05 pm

Penguin have released 80 little books priced at 80p a piece for their 80th anniversary. I am quite taken by the idea of these little volumes and would like to know if any of you guys have bought any of them?

I've seen these when browsing Waterstones, but i haven't yet had a chance to have a proper look to see what stories are available.

Might try and pick one up at some point though.

The vast majority of them look interesting but I tried to limit myself because I'd hate to buy one I never read.

I'm off to Birmingham tomorrow so I'll look out for these after I'm done browsing manga. At 80p I'd gladly pick up a few.

They look fun to collect. I have ordered 15 of them for the time being but if I like them I will certainly get more because I did pass on a few that looked interesting. Perhaps someday I will catch 'em all.

Currently collected-
  • The Meek One, Dostoevsky
  • Socrates' Defence, Plato
  • How Much Land Does A Man Need?, Tolstoy
  • It Was Snowing Butterflies, Darwin
  • Gooseberries, Chekhov
  • Aphorisms On Love And Hate, Nietzsche
  • The Dhammapada, (Buddhist Text)
  • Three Tang Dynasty Poets, (Various)
  • A Slip Under The Microscope, Wells
  • Leonardo Da Vinci, Vasari
  • A Cup Of Sake Beneath The Cherry Trees, Kenko
  • The Communist Manifesto, Marx
  • Speaking Of Siva, (Anon)
  • Sketchy Doubtful Incomplete Jottings, Goethe
  • How To Use Your Enemies, Gracián
In particular I would like to pick up the volume from Mozart, My Dearest Father, as I was not aware Mozart had left writings alongside his music and it would be interesting to read what such a man had to say. The Great Fire Of London, extracted from the famed diary of Samuel Pepys also interests me as I once held a fascination with a certain kind of book that this definitely falls under. All in all they've successfully got me very much interested in books and reading again, thanks in no small part to the compact form factor.

I've got the Goethe, Melville, Whitman and Balzac ones and haven't read any of them yet

Are they selling in like regular supermarkets? If so, I'll pop down to ASDA and get a few

I don't know, the only store I've seen stocking them apart from online shops is Waterstones, but I guess there's no harm in taking a peep if you're going there anyway.
