2016 in Music

Post by Yinga Garten » Fri Oct 24, 2014 8:04 pm

POST ABOUT MUSIC RELEASED IN 2K16 ANYTHING IN THE PAST IS NOW IRRELEVANT INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[2014 MUSIC]
So we're well through the year now with plenty of decent albums being released with it being a solid year overall, if albeit unspectacular (nothing really comes to mind for me as a truly great album).

Out of the circa. 100 2k14 releases I've listened to I've liked these albums the most:
Image
(Little Dragon - Nabuma Rubberband)
Image
(Cloud Nothings - Here And Nowhere Else)
Image
(Interpol - El Pintor)
Image
(Flying Lotus - You're Dead)
Image
Image
(Sharon Van Etten - Are We There)
Image
(The War On Drugs - Lost In The Dream)

2014 is nearly out with two months left but I'm looking forward to these albums (hopefully out this year):
Weezy F Baby - Tha Carter V (out next week so not long wait thankfully)
New Kendrick Lamar album (looks set to drop this year I hope)
New Kanye West album (looking unlikely now but I hold out in hope)
TV On The Radio - Seeds
Royksopp - The Inevitable End (their final studio album it seems)

So what 2014 releases have you lot been enjoying? Are you anticipating any albums to drop before the year is out?

AotY: Swans // To Be Kind

Best of 2014:
Busdriver // Perfect Hair
Clipping // CLPPNG
Death Grips // N***as on the Moon / The Powers that B Disc 1
Flying Lotus // You're Dead!
Freddie Gibbs & Madlib // Piñata
Neil Cicierega // Mouth Sounds
Sun Kil Moon // Benji

Other Highlights:
Aphex Twin // Syro
Death From Above 1979 // The Physical World
Julian Casablancas + The Voidz // Tyranny
Kishi Bashi // Lighght
La Roux // Trouble in Paradise
milo // A Toothpaste Suburb
Neil Cicierega // Mouth Silence
Open Mike Eagle // Dark Comedy
Real Estate // Atlas
Shabazz Palaces // Lese Majesty
The War on Drugs // Lost in the Dream
Weezer // Everything Will Be Alright in the End

This year has been infinitely better than last year music-wise, at least to my tastes.

As for anticipated stuff, I can't wait for TPtB disc 2 to drop, and the new TV on the Radio album has my attention by default despite the wonky singles. Also hyped for the new Panda Bear album, although that's early 2015. Moderately excited for new Royksopp and certainly pumped at the arisen prospects of new Kanye, Kendrick and Fleet Foxes efforts however unlikely these may be (unless they drop out of nowhere). I am happy with this year music-wise, anyway.

I feel inclined to check out the new Deadmau5 album, I have heard pretty good things about it surprisingly. I'm still kind of frustrated at him for spoiling the ending of Breaking Bad to millions of clueless followers on Twitter but one should separate the artist from the art, I guess.

Edit: I just called Deadmau5 an 'artist'. I feel dirty.

I just stopped following him on Twitter, along with a bunch of other "EDM" musicians. They act like man-children half of the time.

Not that I particularly care about spoilers for BrBa or in general, but cbf with Joel's abrasiveness on a day to day basis over trivial matters.

I don't think Fleet Foxes are active right now but I hope they can put something out next year, great band.

I'll give my view on some of the albums noodle-link listed:
Swans//To Be Kind - Definitely captivating if at times a slog, might be better than 'The Seer'. Its one of the best albums of the year but I wouldn't say its one of the ones I've been enjoying the most with continuous plays.
Death Grips//Black People On The Moon - Couldn't be more disappointed by this, does nothing and goes nowhere being extremely repetitive beat wise, hopefully Jenny Death will be a good bow out for Death Grips but I doubt it.
Freddie Gibbs & Madlib//Piñata - Probalby the best hip-hop album I've heard this year with generally solid beats from Madlib, its not been a good year for hip-hop.
Sun Kil Moon//Benji - Couldn't be more bored by this guy, must be the most overrated release this year.
Aphex Twin//Syro - Extremely solid return if not reaching exceptional heights.
Death From Above 1979//The Physical World - Another disappointment for me, felt like it was lacking something.
Shabazz Palaces//Lese Majesty - Interesting, worth a listen.
Weezer//Everything Will Be Alright In The End - Best thing they've put out since Maladroit (which isn't hard) but not that good, the suite at the end is... strange.

Don't get me started on that FKA Twigs album, two decent tracks on it, structurally repetitive and largely, lyrically banal. Flash in the pan.

I hated the FKA Twigs album. It was like a ridiculously monotonous version of Bjork's Homogenic minus anything that made that album amazing and plus an annoying R+B vocal. I respect that a lot of people liked it but I just can't get into it.

I completely understand your points on the DG, Swans and Sun Kil Moon albums there, Yinga. Not gonna bother trying to sell NotM to you, it's an extremely inaccessible piece and I didn't like it at all on my first listen, but its since grown to great heights for me personally. To not understand why some people see Benji as overrated is being blind to the subjectivity of taste given that from a certain perspective Kozelek's music (at least on this album) is so mundane, repetitive and train-of-thought strung-out that it's impossible to enjoy for some people; that's just not my perspective. Swans... repetitive + lengthy = inaccessible, yadda yadda yadda. Personally it's in my top three albums of this decade let alone my favourite of 2014 thus far.

Also, Weezer, Shabazz and DFA1979 are very light 7s if not strong 6s for me. Wasn't sure where to draw the line, really. But yes, Weezer is a highlight given that, y'know, they've actually bothered writing decent music again.

I think it's been an excellent year for hip-hop, personally. The only real let-downs have been NehruvianDOOM and Run the Jewels 2 for me. Otherwise it's been great, esp. with Busdriver, CLPPNG and Gibbs/Madlib.

EDM artists are all knob-twiddlers, basically. If you're into knob-twiddling, then cool. If not, then cool. But yes, Joel is a stain judging from his internet persona and I never followed him in the first place nor do I ever intend to. I'll give the album a try when I have time, regardless.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and state it's in his top three albums, rating alongside Random Album Title and For Lack of a Better Name... just, stick to the first disc. By all means listen to the second disc once and then just forget it ever exists.

So far I've not purchased any new albums this year, although I have thoroughly enjoyed Johnny Marr's single 'Easy Money' even though I have not yet listened to his album. I also still need to listen to To Kill A King's new EP, since 'Word of Mouth' was a good listen.

That being said I'll most likely buy the new Foo Fighters album come November, hopefully it will continue their return to form (although I doubt it will reach the heights of their early work).
I used to be part of the community, now I just watch it...

Can't say I've listened to so many new albums this year, but I really do love Sharon Van Etten and Are we There (Probably her best release so far), as well as Wild Beasts and Present Tense.

- Elbow - The Take Off and Landing of Everything
- Future Islands - Singles
- Kishi Bashi - Lighght (probably my overall favourite)
- The New Pornographers - Brill Bruisers
- Woods - With Light and with Love

sort of vague list of albums of the year kind of in order

1. Adult Jazz - Gist Is
2. Perfume Genius - Too Bright
3. Iceage - Plowing Into The Field Of Love (could very possibly rise higher)
4. Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra - gooseberry fool Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything
5. Swans - To Be Kind

I think I heard Robin Pecknold went back to university or something so Fleet Foxes won't be doing anything for a while

EDIT: Two albums I really hope will drop this year but I highly doubt will are the new Titus Andronicus and Olivia Tremor Control albums
I'm not quite sure how I got the title of my AOTY wrong first time round

I'm yet to hear the new Iceage but I adored their first two albums so I'm particularly excited for this one, especially given the band's alleged evolution.

I haven't actually heard their first two, but I hear this one's quite different. There's a pretty heavy Nick Cave influence on it. I definitely recommend it, although it seems to be pretty marmite.
Oh yeah and for what it's worth I am eternally hoping for a new Joanna Newsom album

Really? I'm pretty sure it got BNM on P4k and Fantano gave it a 9. Its score on RYM is well above those of its predecessors, too. I'm sure I'll enjoy it, anyway.

It's been well reviewed but a lot of people seem to disagree with that, at least from what I've seen. A lot of people seem to love it (myself included), but I think quite a few people find it kind of overrated (probably due to the fantano review).

I'd say it's most definitely due to it getting BNM. Literally everyone bashes anything Pitchfork gives a shining review.

The first single they put out is bad which kinda threw people off, the album is fine. I don't think Iceage are a great band but the new album is more of an evolution than reinvention.

Gonna listen to this new release shortly:

Even though the records widely vary in quality these days it'll always be an interesting listen.
