Olympics 2016 - Sports Thread

Post by row101 » Fri Aug 05, 2016 10:55 am

Non-sports thread HERE

This thread is for discussion of the various sporting events taking place during the Olympics in Rio. In addition to the London selection, Golf and Rugby Sevens are being added to this year's events.

The Opening Ceremony is tonight, and sporting events get underway Saturday. What're y'all looking forward to?

It has come around quickly, I still need to order some team GB kit as I think Stella McCartney has done a great job, I enjoy watching most if not all of the events and will watch whatever is on when I am at home, just not very happy with the name "team GB" as it excused Northern Ireland from its name but understand "team UK" does not flow as well

it is a shame we do not have a football team this time so I am supporting Germany and Fiji, the football has already started with Germany drawing 2-2 against Mexico and Fiji lousing by a massive 8-0 against South Korea, in women football Germany won 6-1 against Zimbabwe

Could've had a women's football team thanks to England's World Cup finish but FA and FIFA politics meant everyone was too far away from an agreement that could make it work. Which is a shame since the Olympics is probably the pinnacle of women's football. Or can at least match the World Cup unlike the men's.

Mostly in it for the football myself, but will watch other bits that are on. Might make an effort to see the canoe slalom because I saw that by chance in 2012 and that was pretty cool to watch.

I shall likely be dipping in and out of the various sports, what i see will simply depend on the TV schedule as i'm not intending to watch any particular event.

Will watch the opening ceremony when it's repeated on BBC2 tomorrow morning, there's not a chance in hell of me staying up until 4am to see it.

Not sure why you decided to create that one Row, off topic these days has become so toxic that most of us don't even bother making new threads there anymore.

I stayed up until 4am to watch the full opening ceremony and it really wasn't worth it. There was pretty fire at the end but what came before didn't justify not getting any sleep.

I didnt watch the opening ceremony, I will have to watch the highlights although I always enjoy watching the various nations enter the arena, I would have thought the Russian group looked a lot smaller this year

I'm glad i didn't stay up to watch it, it was nowhere near as good as the London opening, or Beijing/Sochi for that matter.

The olympic cauldron is neat though.

Is this it?

The Germany one will be a lot harder to track down, as it's likely to only be on sale over there.

Yes that is the one! thankyou! I had just been on the Team GB shop as well but did not see it, just need to work out those sizes, it is a shame the ones for sale do not seem to include the union flag on the sleeve

Saw the women's road race yesterday with that horrifying crash on the descent into Rio. Waiting for an update on van Vleuten's condition was the most tense I've felt in ages.

It's good to see that Team GB have won their first medals, it's just a shame though that all the main events take place after midnight (UK time) which means i don't get to see a great deal.

Have managed to see some of the archery, gymnastics, and hockey events so far though, and the track cycling will be on at prime time which should be handy.

I saw news footage of the road race crash too, that was a horrible incident.

I've been lying in bed with the TV on for the post midnight stuff, fell asleep not long after Peaty's medal ceremony last night. Was actually ridiculous how far ahead Ledecky was in the next race. Might as well pretend Jazz won Gold in that since Ledecky had finished, got out the pool and dried off by the time everyone else finished.

The road race was dreadful and it's not really surprising either which is the worst thing. Had a weekend of Chris Boardman on the BBC going on about how dangerous the course is.

The rugby 7s is so much more entertaining to watch that normal rugby. Disappointed GB missed out on a medal in it yesterday but the men go today.

It won't last once China win all 5 badminton golds and 3 remaining diving golds, but we can enjoy it for the time being.

The population of China is estimated at 1,393,783,836 as of July 1 2014. China's population is equivalent to 19.24% of the total world population. China ranks number 1 in the list of countries by population. The population density in China is 145 people per Km2.
There are 321,823,715 people in the United States of America. If everyone in the U.S. lined up single file, the line would stretch around the Earth almost 7 times. That's a lot of people.
U.K. Population, The population of the United Kingdom is estimated at 63,489,234 as of July 1 2014. U.K.'s population is equivalent to 0.88% of the total world population.
Clearly we are just the best beating those odds
