What it says on the title. Post anything to do with F1 here, be it news, gossip, or just discussion on the best teams and drivers.

New poll up too.

Lotus may be doing badly this season, but I still follow them hoping that they'll get a good break soon.
Also been following McLaren and Mercedes as drivers Button and Hamilton are still my favourites.

Haha, i came here just now with the intention of making this thread myself.

Anyhow, the main new story doing the rounds in F1 at the moment is the potential imminent demise of Caterham. It's a pity really, as the first post in the old ONM thread was the unveiling of their very first car.

Poor D.J didn't even get to start this thread!

Re Caterham, I feel nothing for the shoddy management of the team but feel unbelievably sorry all the people who are currently employed by Caterham, poor people probably don't even know when (or if) they'll get paid next. I was delighted to see new teams enter the sport back in 2010 but the lack of a spending cap (which they entered into the sport believing a spending cap would be imposed) really screwed them over. Unless Marussia becomes Ferraris b team like Sauber used to be (to a degree anyway, for young potential Ferrari drivers) in an see them going the same way soon enough which is a shame as I was delighted when Bianchi scored his and his teams first points at Monaco this year.

So. Grosjean is staying with Lotus, it seems.
Here's hoping they have more success in the next season.

And Caterham, another team I used to follow, back when they were called Team Lotus. Might not have had that many successes, but they sure did try.

Has Grosjean been confirmed now? I wonder how the Mercedes power unit will affect his sponsorship with Total, they may not want to sponsor now it won't be utilising Renault power.

Nico Hulkenberg will stay with Force India in 2015 too, so once again, he's been overlooked by all the top teams, pity.

Strange that Lotus which was once Renault and basically was in all but name for the past few seasons won't have any connection with them next season

Hopefully their 2015 car won't be utterly eton mess (though I hope Williams maintain their great form too)

I hope Williams carry on their impressive form as well, Bottas really does look a star of the future! Won't next season be the first time in a while that the team from Enstone hasn't been using Renault power? I'm sure I read somewhere they've been using Renault power for over 20 years.

Seems fair to resticky this.

And its been an entertaining season so far, bar a few races, and its good that its still undecided going into the last few races for once.

2015 will be the first time that team hasn't used Renault (or Renault based) engines since 1994, so it's certainly a significant change for them.

I never remember the F1 thread being this active especiallly from 2012 onwards. Change of forum helps I guess.

Sad to hear that the Caterham team have gone into administration and that we're back down to 10 teams, but I suppose they really suffered from not finishing in the top 10 last year and events behind the scenes at that team is just appauling.

Also, fun fact, this is the first time that Nico Hulkenberg hasn't moved teams between seasons. Seems he's finally settled at a team.

It's really not looking good for Marussia or Caterham now. Neither of these two teams will go to America to compete in the US Grand Prix. According to sky sports news Marussia are also in financial difficulties. Maybe they won't even make next season even though they will most likely finish 9th in the constructors this year.

Maybe thats why they changed the engine rules, so that they could convince manufacturer teams to come back into the sport.

But then, those teams have their own problems in that they can pull out at any time and are usually only in it to advertise their cars, and so therefore want their teams to be competing for the title...

Well I know Mercedes were ready to walk away from the sport if the 1.6 V6 Turbo engines were not introduced so you have to wonder whether they'd have stuck with the sport much longer if this season didn't go to plan and it was another team that won the WDC/WCC, seems like this season has saved the Mercedes team for the short term at least. The same happened with BMW, they could have challenged for the WDC in 2008 if I remember correctly (only started watching F1 in 2009) but they were leading the WDC at one point weren't they? Same happened with Honda as well, seasons of poor performance, as soon as they could have won the WDC/WCC they pulled the plug on their entire F1 operation.

BMW made the mistake of not realising when they had the good car and thought that they would have a better chance in 2009 and winning the world championship through maximising the use of KERS, presumably to create a positive image and the fact that they also thought that all downforce boosting designs would be banned

Of course, the teams that were winning the following season were the ones who exploited a loophole in the rules and because it didn't go BMW's way they quit. Ironically if they'd invested more into their car in 2008 Robert Kubica could have been in with a chance of the championship instead of being the guy who unlapped Hamilton and Vettel and led to Vettel overtaking Hamilton towards the end of the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix.

I personally feel that even despite their ongoing financial issues, it was Bianchi's accident that has effectively crippled Marussia.

It's a very sad situation, and reminds me somewhat of the issues that Simtek faced all those years ago.

I just hope that the team will be able to get things together and make a comeback, as otherwise, all the hard work and effort put in by Jules at Monaco to score those points will be for nothing.

Considering Alonso and Raikkonnen started their F1 careers at the same time I know people have usually tended to compare to two.

After this season as teammates, could we use this season as proof that Alonso is the better driver of the two or not?

Raikkonnen never got used to his car, but maybe that's just due to Alonso being settled at Ferrari.

I think Alonso is the better of the two tbh but Raikkonnen is still a very good driver, he just hasn't been this season.

Raikkonen was at his peak in 2005, even when he won his title, he wasn't the best driver in the field that season.

Does everybody else here think that Vettel is heading to Ferrari and Alonso to McLaren? That's what I think will happen but as nothing has been confirmed it's still open for discussion.

From next year I can say I'll be part of the tifosi, will be interesting to see how the combo of Vettel and Raikkonen pans out, I think next years car will be much more suited to Kimi and Vettel who from what I hear have a similar driving style so expect Kimi to be much more competitive overall next season.

More than likely that Vettel will go to Ferrari, Alonso is desperate for a Mercedes seat as one could be open to take in 2016, though he'd have to take a sabbatical instead of a year in McLaren as they want him to stay for longer under the contract.

Vettel will almost certainly be driving for Ferrari next season.

As much as I love him being in F1 Raikkonen has always struck me as the kind of guy who when he's winning will put a 110% into doing everything he can to keep it up but can become bored and frustrated easily when results go against him. That's not to say he's a bad driver since he's been around F1 and won races for three different teams but when he has to give interviews he can sound uninterested and blunt with people

I think that's just Kimi though, not sounding particularly interested during interviews etc. I'm not sure how animated he was during his title winning campaign as I only started watching in 2009 but I doubt he'd have been much different.

Also I doubt Alonso would take a sabbatical, a two year deal with McLaren would be a good move for him, he'll most likely have some sort of release clause that he can easily get out of McLaren again if the car isn't good or the engine isn't good etc. I don't know why he's setting his sights on Mercedes for 2016 as well, with the combination of Rosberg and Hamilton and their respective form do they really need to change? You could argue Mercedes only need to let Rosberg win 1 WDC before he's happy enough to settle into a strong 2nd driver with Hamilton number one which would keep the team very happy and harmonious for a few years to come, it's not like Alonso has a contract for 2016 already, it's evident that's what he's waiting for but personally I doubt it'll happen unless Mercedes have a big falling out, which may or may not happen depending on who wins the WDC this year.
