Ferrari have looked good (would say even great) in testing, but as it's just testing I'm not keeping my hopes up

Got to say, given that the McLaren has had loads of trouble in testing I'm surprised that Alonso is staying with them. He should have taken the chance to go to Mercedes and try to get the third world championship he has coveted for so long, but once again he's made a poor decision on where to go so I think he'll retire a two time champion. Who knows? He may even walk out of F1 this year if Stoffel Vandoorne keeps outqualifying him although it does seem like McLaren are stuck in a rut which they can't get out of.

It's also now 10 years since Ferrari last won the driver's championship and 9 since McLaren won it. Seems like they've been usurped to an extent by Mercedes and Red Bull, ironically enough Jackie Stewart has links to both those team's predecessors...

Perhaps Alonso has simply given up on trying for a third title?

I mean think about it, he spent years fighting for championships, and dealing with the pressure and expectation which comes from that (especially during the Ferrari years). Since joining McLaren though, he probably knows deep down that he can just get on and enjoy his racing without that level of pressure, especially since he's spent much of the last two seasons walking back to the garage after breaking down.

I still think this is why Jenson was kept on, if McLaren and Honda don't get their act together and Fernando calls it a day then Jenson is a good driver to be able to fall back on. If they are at the back again I wouldn't blame Fernando for quitting but then why would Jenson want to race for a third season near the back of the grid.

Had to smile when i read this...
When asked whether he was able to take Barcelona's Turn 3 flat out, Alonso also made a joke about the lack of performance.

"Oh yeah, for us, not only Turn 3," he smiled. "For us nearly all the corners are flat."

Just read that John Surtees has sadly died at the age of 83, still the only person to win a championship on 2 and 4 wheels.

Surtees was a true legend of motor sport, had the privelege of meeting him once (Coys Festival, Silverstone 1997), he was a really nice chap.

Heard the news too. Sad day for all motorsport, in both car and on bike.

I think in the first race of both the new F1 and the new MotoGP season they should hold a one minute silence before the race starts in his honour.

Just been watching this, you might recognise some of the drivers competing, not to mention the team bosses...

I had to double check just to make sure this was legit.

I love it! It's one of the most bonkers colour schemes we've seen in F1 for years!

Thanks to this, McLaren's orange, and Sauber's blue/gold, F1 finally has a colourful grid again, and it's a breath of fresh air after the dull liveries of recent seasons.

When I first saw they had changed to a pink colour scheme I thought it was a joke, doesn't look anywhere near as bad as I thought it would do. Much better than the predominantly silver they launched with.

At least Force India will stand out on the grid this season. I'm not a big fan of their previous livery, it blended in too much with the Mercedes and the McLaren that it wasn't immediately obvious that it was a Force India and you only had to look at the finer detail of their car.

The Indian flag livery was a much better colour scheme and stood out more. But yeah, this one is definitely not going to get confused with the rest of the grid.

are the drivers looking for a get out clause, because they don't want to be seen dead in that?

It'll certainly be easier to tell the cars apart now, Force India are the pink ones, Renault are the yellow ones, and McLaren are the orange ones parked at the side of the track with smoke bellowing from the rear end.

Haha.

Though looking at it overall we have:

Red - Ferrari
Orange - McLaren
Yellow - Renault
Blue - Toro Rosso, Sauber (White and gold should help distinguish the Sauber)
Dark Blue - Red Bull
White - Williams
Silver - Mercedes, Haas (kind of, the Haas is a darker colour)
Pink - Force India

Definitely a colour variety this season.

EDIT: This also makes it easy for FOM to choose the coloured stripes that show up beside the drivers on the on screen graphics, something that I've liked since they introduced it. Given Mercedes get the turqouise stripe due to Petronas then I guess Haas will get the Silver strip, leaving the Blue strip for either Toro Rosso or Sauber. I'd give it to Toro Rosso.

DOUBLE EDIT:

interesting to see Mclaren trying to pull a Redbull and look for a way to fish for a new engine. However perhaps they should have looked to supply another team to help speed up the development and reliability issues the engine have suffered.

Yep, they really should have supplied a backmarker like Sauber or Manor before they got the Mercedes deal. It's actually kind of amazing Honda are still lagging so far behind the others, they're in their 3rd season now yet still have neither power or reliability, it's actually be very interesting how well McLaren would go if they had a Mercedes power unit in the back rather than a Honda unit, would they be winners? The past few seasons they've been adamant about their chassis being strong (despite them not doing overly well at the less power intensive tracks) and them not really capitalising when they did have the Mercedes power unit in 2014.
