Re: Film Thread
Spider-Man: Homecoming was great, Michael Keaton played a brilliant villain. Didn't think much of Shocker, but I did like the nod to his original costume in the jacket he wore.
Much as I love the Tobey Maguire films (not necessarily for the right reasons), this is definitely my favourite Spidey film to date.

Re: Film Thread
Dunkirk: a non-stop nail-biting experience of one event in British history. Incredibly tense, but ultimately uplifting by the end.
It's also a great display of the British "stiff-upper lip" ideal, to not surrender and to keep on going. However, as my friend who saw it with me thought, emotional drama and weight is certainly not as prominent as it maybe should. But then again, in my view, that may have detracted from the core experience of the film.
Some good performances, but none particularly outstanding. What is most notable is Hans Zimmer's excellent score, a constant ticking tenseness that never ceases.
All in all, a great film and a must see.

Re: Film Thread
I saw Dunkirk last night, thought it was fantastic. As you said the musical score was fantastic with how it kept the tension throughout the film. Thought the relative lack of dialogue certainly helped with the atmosphere of the film as well.
The only part I didn't really understand was why the pilot played by Tom Hardy decided to land his plane in the an area outside of allied control and subsequently letting himself be captured rather than just ejecting over the sea and stand a chance of getting evacuated alongside the other British troops after he's glided down to earth with his parachute. He also stood around to watch his plane burn rather than getting out of there, I get he probably had orders to burn it if landed in enemy territory but why did he stick around past the point of no return for the craft?

Re: Film Thread
Yeh, that is a little odd. I think it's mainly because after Tom Hardy shoots down the last enemy plane whilst he himself only gliding without any fuel, he knows that the final boat must have already left, and that it would be pointless and too risky to glide back out into open water for just the hope of being picked up by a boat. Instead he'd rather land the plane safely, destroy it so the Germans don't get their hands on it, and be taken as a prisoner of war since then he has the chance to live

Re: Film Thread
I thought there were still troops waiting to be picked up when he first flew over and shot the plane down, I'm sure there was troops cheering.

Re: Film Thread
The only thing I can find after a quick Google is that parachutes needed to be deployed at higher altitudes to open properly, it'd have made more sense in my opinion to decrease speed over the sea and risk the parachute rather than get caught, stood a good chance of getting killed either from the fall or as a prisoner of war so the odds weren't amazing either way.

The pedant in me still thinks the title should have been spelled properly, as all the signs in France call it Dunkerque.

Power Rangers (2017) and it was as good an adaptation as I thought. Of course most of what I think we all wanted to see was towards the end, but overall they've done well at establishing the core team of rangers in what I hope will continue with the green ranger, as confirmed by the post-credits scene.

Re: Film Thread
They certainly did do a good job of building the characters, though the final battle's reliance on the zords... I suppose it was something different from the usual summon the zords -> form the megazord most seasons rely on.

Watched Arrival for the first time last night, it was amazing! Never got round to seeing it when it was on at the cinema but bought it on Blu-Ray a few weeks ago. Very pleased I did!

Just watched Kong: Skull Island. Really quite good, I enjoyed it. Really liked the visual callbacks to previous Kong films, plus the 70's Vietnam period works rather well. 2005 version is still better, but this new one is still thoroughly entertaining. Makes me look forward to the Godzilla/Kong crossover!

Re: Film Thread
Saw Valerian and the City of a Thousand Plabets last night. Had potential, but really wasn't that good in the end. For all of it's fantastical visuals and creative worlds, aliens, etc, it's all wasted on a plot that's all over the place, and acting that is utterly bland. Literally, very little engaging dialogue or emotion is displayed. When Rhihanna turns up, she gives a better performance than the main cast!

I love you, but that is one of the most inane things ever said during a discussion about the merits of a film.
just playing, no actual offence intended

Yep I recently watch that and I 100% agree with you, the soundtrack was ace as well.SupaWaluigi wrote: ↑Sun Aug 20, 2017 10:11 pmJust watched Kong: Skull Island. Really quite good, I enjoyed it. Watched Star Trek Beyond at the weekend and it's certainly the most action packed of the trilogy but it was hugely enjoyable and Simon Pegg did a good job with the script.

Re: Film Thread
Watched IT (2017) this evening, excellent film. A lot of people have been saying it's not really scary, and for the most part that is true, at least not in the sense of most modern horrors relying on jump scares all the time, but there is a lot of terrifying imagery and visuals throughout, with a great sense of fear within the characters which really drives the whole film. All actors are great, even if the characters of The Losers are a little underdeveloped, but Bill Skarsgard amazes as Pennywise. Everything about him is perfectly creepy when he's subtle, then incredibly horrific when he's let loose.
All in all, a great callback to classic Monster Movies, that stands out amongst other Blockbuster horrors.

Re: Film Thread
I saw IT last week. I had a funny stomach the next day.
I've never been into horror films but my wife is, so we went on the basis that she came with me to see Batman Vs. Superman. I suspect she'll be pulling that card out every so often for the rest of ever after.

Re: Film Thread
I watched the first Saw film. I've never seen a full one and presumed I'd hate them and almost certainly would hate all the others as I dislike that kind of violence in films, but it was actually quite ok. I thought the philosophy behind jigsaws motives was quite an interesting concept and I'm suprised this hasn't been done before, it was quite obvious it was made on a low budget but I was quite drawn in by it. It was all about the ending, the film built momentum really well, I didn't see the twist coming and I actually felt a bit of adrenaline at the reveal when the music kicked in (and that is a wicked score) 8/10

Re: Film Thread
The Saw films are generally hit and miss, while some are pretty decent (1, 2, and 6 in particular), others just aren't up to scratch (3 and 4).

Saw Blade Runner last night
Best film I've seen in a cinema since Fury Road imo. So good.

Oh yeah, I also saw Blade Runner 2049 the other day. Really good, very enjoyable. Great performances from everyone, visually astonishing. Yet, theme-wise in comparison to the first Blade Runner, still good but not as strong.
