Agreed! And to continue with the variety, here is another SONM story, this time from Aren!

SONM's Silent Night

Many people assume that Christmas Eve is a time of peace and quiet. The image that the date inspires is one of cold evenings, people sat around the fire with a drink while children lie in bed and dream of the toys that Santa Garf will bring. Unfortunately for Met, SONM does not conform to expectations. It always finds a way to be worse than it was the last time you looked. Yet another scheme to create an independent Scotland was being foiled. This time, not by the forces of evil in Westminster, instead, by the lack of quiet required to formulate the plan itself.

The roar of an explosion tore through the halls of the SONM Building. Doof and Euan were having another Pun War, throwing the worst puns that they could devise at each other. With devastating results. Met sighed and put his pen down. There was no way he could work in these conditions. He got up from his chair and moved across the darkened room to his shrine. He knelt down before his dedications to his various heroes: Cthulhu, Suu, Nicola Sturgeon, Dio and more. He prayed to these higher powers for the peace he so desired. His prayers were seemingly answered when he glanced up. Barely visible in the candle light and reflected in the glass covering a photo of Alestorm was a package. It was a flat rectangular shape, wrapping in gold paper and tied up with a ribbon.

Met recognised the package. It was a Christmas present from the year before. Met had been a very good boy in 2014, so Santa Garf had brought him more presents than most. So many, in fact, that it had taken him all year to get through them all. He had even rented a warehouse just to store everything. This package was the last one. Catching sight of it in the reflection couldn’t have been a sign, could it? There was no harm in opening now, at least. He thought he might as well finish opening last year’s presents before the next batch arrived.

Met slowly walked back across the room and picked up the package in one hand. It was light and slightly floppy. Paper, perhaps? With a single swift movement, Met tore the ribbon and paper from the present. Met paused for a moment as he stared at the object in his hand. A sleek notebook with a black cover and the words “Death Note” scrawled on the front cover. He carefully opened the first page and read what was written on the inside. The rules of the Death Note. Just as they were in the anime and manga. It was an impressive replica, but something felt off about it.

“About time you opened that,” a voice said.

Met turned to look over his should to find the source of the voice. A Shinigami. To be specific, Jenova. Met smiled at the idea. It was a good prank, he’d give Jen that much credit. But how did Jenova know when he would open it?

“Very funny,” Met said as he put the Death Note down on his desk along with the plans for Scotland’s freedom.

“Funny? Do I look like I’m gooseberry fool joking?” Jenova scowled, “Do you realise how long I’ve been waiting for you to touch that thing?”

“Who cares?” Met asked.

“You do, because that eton mess’s real,” Jenova said, “Do you really think I’d wait this long if I was just gooseberry fool with you and giving you a fake? It really wouldn’t be worth the effort with how long it’s taken you to get round to it.”

“Guess not,” Met said and looked down at the notebook. He certainly wasn’t prepared to believe it was real just yet, however. “Prove it.”

“Do it yourself, I’m out of here,” Jenova said dismissively before phasing through the wall and out of Met’s room.

That encounter was pointless at best. Still, if it was a real Death Note, there were plenty of shenanigans he could get up to by using it. He had other replicas, so it didn’t really matter if he wrote in it as a test. There was nothing wasted or ruined. He just needed to think of someone’s name to write. Someone he didn’t really care about. Someone who he would find out about pretty quickly if they died.

Of course, who else?

Met grabbed his pen and quickly scribbled down a name on the first page while imagining their face as per the instructions. Then, he looked to the clock on the wall and waited. The second hand slowly ticked, moving around the clock face in a manner that seemed to take forever. Forty seconds finally passed. Nothing. But, of course, he was the only person in the room. There was no one to collapse there and then.

Then it happened. An ear-splitting screech filled the air. It was incredible that someone could produce such a high pitched sound. Especially knowing that person was male. It was his cue to get confirmation that the scream was indeed what he expected. Met covered the Death Note with some of the paper on his desk and left his room. He wasn’t the only one out in the corridor. Several other people had come to find out what had happened.

“What the Hell, yo?” Edd asked.

“I bet someone just looked at Edd,” Mr EE replied from across the hall.

“You take that back!” Edd cried out.

Tensions were high between the two, as always, and with the inevitable competition to see which of them got the best presents to come, a fight looked imminent. However, there was no chance for an escalation to occur as a door at the end of the corridor burst open. Richard stood there, panting heavily and with tears streaming down his face.

“Her… Her Majesty…” Richard tried to say.

At this, a lot of people waved it off and returned to their rooms. Met joined in with the reaction, but, inside, he felt very different. It had worked. His plan was brilliant. The Death Note was real and he had learnt the result instantly.

Met rushed back to his desk and threw the papers aside to reveal the Death Note. His prayers had been answered. This was what he needed to get some peace and quiet. His plan to free Scotland from English oppression couldn’t be stopped now. He could deal with everyone who got in his way. He could do it. He would do it. In fact, only he could do it. Anyone else would probably gooseberry fool it up.

Met grabbed the Death Note and his pen, concealing them inside his clothes, and ran to the SONM Library on the bottom floor of the building. Inside, he knew where to find SONM’s photo album. A collection of everyone’s names and faces. The library was quiet. Books are for nerds, after all. The only other person there was Kaee, who was busy checking out an anthology of sudden weight gain stories.

“Delete… delete… delete… delete!” Met muttered as he quickly wrote down as many names as he could before someone discovered him, making sure that Kaee was first to die. He wasn’t going to be stopped by a furry. Kaee’s antics had no place in Met’s ideal Scotland.

It didn’t take long to finish writing down the names of everyone in SONM. Met only briefly stopped to acknowledge the thud as Kaee collapsed behind a nearby bookshelf. It would soon be over. Everyone would die. SONM would finally have a silent night.
