Re: gooseberry fool Off, And Stop Locking Threads
So giving you an optional swear filter (opt out rather than opt in, but optional all the same) and not enforcing any meaningful anti-swearing policy ourselves is now "heavy handed"?
I think this is a bit of a stretch of the mind.

Yes? It's pointless. It's moderation for the sake of moderation. If this forum wants to thrive, it needs to reflect the will of the greater community, not some self serving "this is how it worked before" moderators.Wrathy wrote:So giving you an optional swear filter (opt out rather than opt in, but optional all the same) and not enforcing any meaningful anti-swearing policy ourselves is now "heavy handed"?

At what point did three users become "the greater community"?abx wrote:Yes? It's pointless. It's moderation for the sake of moderation. Re: gooseberry fool Off, And Stop Locking Threads
An optional filter is heavy-handed, good one.
As for it being opt-out as opposed to opt-in, personally I might have had it the other way but opt-out protects the interests of new members who may feel uncomfortable with swearing. One thing I would say however is that we need better sign-posting of the filter and how to remove it in the UCP - also it really should have been announced when it was applied, since the lack of information might feel less inclusive for members.

It's unnecessary. A light touch, damnit.

It's unnecessary for you, it's there for others who may not share your outlook.

Re: gooseberry fool Off, And Stop Being Dicks
This thread covers how to turn it off, and it was mentioned in the main welcome announcement.
As LFF says, it keeps the forums open and inviting to all potential (and current) members, even if they do find swearing uncomfortable and/or unnecessary. If you don't, just turn the filter off and forget it ever existed. Simple.
But you know if you want to find things to complain about and this is what you bring up I guess things can't be too bad!

Re: gooseberry fool Off, And Stop Being Dicks
Regarding the fact that no one seemed to complain whatsoever prior to the filter, it seems I can't quite agree with you there pal.
Additionally who the gooseberry fool are you trying to welcome? The only people who use this forum are the people who come from ONM anyway, so what's the point trying to be accessible contrare to cultivating your forum for its already existent and limited userbase?

A few members have expressed concerns about excessive swearing due to the new rule-set, albeit in a quieter and less noticeable manner.

A few, you say? A few that would've probably done just fine with an opt-in system instead?

Why do you even care? Opt out and pretend it doesn't exist. It's not difficult.

Both would have sufficed, but we chose opt-out. It just takes a single click to turn it off, so you're getting angry about very little.

it's opt-in for you now. If you want to opt-in, enable it in your UCP here.abx wrote:A few, you say? A few that would've probably done just fine with an opt-in system instead?

It's a theme of this moderation team that is gonna end up making this place dull and uninteresting. I'm trying to point out eton mess you should stop doing.LFF wrote:Both would have sufficed, but we chose opt-out. You can enable the swear filter in your UCP here. As this is now an opt-in feature for you, your problem has been solved.abx wrote:It's a theme of this moderation team that is gonna end up making this place dull and uninteresting. I'm trying to point out eton mess you should stop doing.
